Bit embarrassing that Donny starts this thread and 36 hours later, no comments.

In the interests of not giving oxygen to the naysayers, some random (and not necessarily well-informed) thoughts:

Ins and outs.
Ruby schleicher a straight swap for Eliza Hynes. Would have liked to see Hynes get another go. Sure, she looks a bit lost sometimes but I reckon she can be an aggressive presence with more game time.
Meg Hutchins another straight swap for Stacey Livingstone. Meg will probably have to go to Phoebe McWilliams with Ruby Schleicher starting on the bench as 2nd ruck. That is unless WS plans to do the opposite???
Holly Whitford will come back better for the experience.
If Mo is to play, she plays out of the goal square. Naming Lauren Tesoriero at full forward: all I can say is there are other threads catering for comment about the coaches.

Chloe Molloy: If not our best player right now, she soon will be. There is a thread for waxing lyrical about her so will not do so here save to say she is a player an astute coach can build a team and a playing style around. Put her in the middle and be done with it. If opposition teams reckon they've got someone who can beat her one on one, unsettle her or match her football nous, well good luck to them.

Cecilia McIntosh in the middle? Don't think so. Possibly the only player we've got with the tank and the concentration to run with Alicia Eva and that's what she'll do.

With Steve Hocking suggesting in his "spirit of the game" memo that teams maintain a 5-6-5 formation, why are teams still being published in the traditional layout? It would make more sense to publish in the format encouraged by head office would it not? In which case our selected team would look like this:

Backs: Grant, Schleicher, Ross, Casey, Morgan
Mids: King, Molloy, McIntosh, Lambert, Barden, Chiocci
Forwards: Garner, Kuys, Bernardi, Edwards, Tesoriero
Int: Bonnici, White, Duffin, Hutchins, Hope

"You know it makes sense."

Get the women onto Victoria Park. Ditching the pokies should persuade Yarra Council we're sweet little buttercups. And if not, spend the money from selling the pokies venues on buying 'em.

Go Pies

PREVIEW:

Sunday sees Collingwood take on the winless GWS and the orange traitor (Eva) in the 'pies first home game for the year. Unfortunately it's not our spiritual home, but the Holden Centre will have to do. Even though the ground completely lacks any elevation or shelter for fans not behind glass it will be better than a trip to scum park and it looks like the club has made some effort towards providing some amentities and experiences for fans.

Back on the footy we'll really need to improve our skills and decision making from last weeks loss against the dockers. Not dropping easy marks or kicking to opponents unopposed in 15m of space would be a big start and go a long way towards notching our first win. From comments around the group this week it's apparent we're aware of the need to clean such things up.

"We talked about the individual things we need to do properly to make our team stronger.

"The little things – basic skills – need to improve."

After two home umpiring displays in our first two matches it remains to be seen whether it will be our turn on Sunday. At the very least I'd expect to see Molloy afforded protection from the dirty roughhouse treatment she repeatedly copped against Fremantle. Hopefully a rowdy crowd in the Collingwood tradition is present on Sunday to alert the umps and also give Eva a nice welcome back.

On Eva she's improved her ball winning ability in orange leading the giants disposal tally last week and along with Gum looks to be a key in their engine room. Eva has also recorded a massive 22 tackles across the first 2 rounds.

While CFC women's footy ops manager James wants to see an open free-flowing game and at times (especially against Carlton) we've moved the ball quickly into space on transition Sunday will be anything but the bruise free footy of AFLX.

James wrote:
“I think you should expect to see an open, free-flowing game,” he predicted.

“We want to take sides on with our game style and they’re a really well structured side.

“We’ve just got to be able to knuckle down when the opposition kick a couple of goals on us.”

Schleicher has been given the task of nailing a spot fullback with Livingstone succumbing to her shoulder injury after popping it out two weeks running. Following a poor game against Carlton and being in and out of the side in 2017 it will be a big and important test for Schleicher. Hopefully for her sake and the chances of a 'pies win she lifts to the challenge. Hutchins' return should also help and although I'd prefer to see her at half back where we can best utilise her kicking she will also provide much needed leadership in defence. Stevens' intercept marking is certainly missed following her defection to the blues, but for mine we've also missed her leadership especially when the opposition gets on a roll.

With faster game play in mind we've also dropped ruckman Hynes (to the PC crowd shoot me it's the traditional footy term). I thought she provided an okay contest in the ruck against the dockers, but at times we were treacle slow with both Hynes and King in the side. Her absence though will place more on the shoulders of Schleicher who will need to spend some minutes as our second ruck.

I also pleased to see Hope return and will be interested to see if the un/official zones will help her game. Another ripper game from Bernardi would go along way to to taking focus off Hope too.

Although winless the giants are anything but bunnies and we will need everything to click if we're to repeat last years thrashing. While such a thrashing is unlikely Sunday is our best chance for a win so far; fingers crossed we're clean enough with the footy to nab the points.

Great write up, cheers. Always interesting getting different views.

I agree it's odd that the AFL continues to publish the side absence wings. The other way of writing the side would be to ditch one flank or pocket.

McIntosh being named in the centre is interesting, it seemed Duffin played mid last week, so anything could happen, but I'd expect Bonnici to lineup on Eva. Molly is a gun and even a team effort from Freo couldn't unsettle her last week. I liked that she kept getting up and on with the game despite attention and whacks Freo dished out.
