It's just a matter of time before the name of a MANdarine is changed, surely?

"Is now" meaning what, exactly? Is it legally mandated? Or is it just one instance that someone randomly found somewhere that has now, at last, condemned us all to a future of political correctness gone mad!?

Stay away from morning TV, folks.

If what happened to me, as an apprentice in the 80's were to happen to a 15 year old kid today. It would be world news.

Well, you can tell us now, right? Shocked What are we talking about here?

I used to work in fast food and retail, so everything from being slapped on the arse by flirty co-workers (female and male) and unexpectedly hugged to just the ordinary touching that one expects from friends (such as pats on the back and shoulder and stuff like that). There were probably a few cases that were actual legitimate sexual harassment (like being groped by an older male co-worker, which I never made a big deal about but did confront him on the spot about), but there was a lot of in-between stuff that nobody where I worked would have even raised an eyebrow at, then or now – but that might still lead to disciplinary action if you did it to a CEO or in a highly professional office environment.

He apologised sincerely on the spot – which is probably all you can hope for in such a situation!

Which is exactly what I suggested above should be encouraged.

All the traning and info I've seen about dealing with sexual harassment or discrimination says exactly that, first step should always be to deal with it at the lowest level. Dispute settling 101, as soon as you escalate something you lose control.

If someone does something you don't like, speak to them. Hopefully you get an apology and everyone can move on. If you get a poor response your choice is to let it go or escalate it.

When I was an apprentice I got held down and stripped and had my cock and balls painted, is that harassment? True story by the way!

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/14/opinion/arbitration-google-facebook-employment.html

"A quick refresher on why forced arbitration is so unfair to workers: Workers win less often in arbitration than in court, and when they do win, they get less money than they would in court. Arbitration is secret and shields wrongdoing from public view. There’s no right to appeal. Forced-arbitration provisions also usually bar class actions, which the Supreme Court blessed in a recent ruling allowing employers to force workers to waive their right to bring a group lawsuit, making it more daunting and difficult for people to sue their employers. And workers don’t genuinely agree to arbitration; they’re typically presented with a take-it-or-leave-it contract to sign if they want to put food on the table.

These problems with forced arbitration make it especially abhorrent in cases of sexual harassment.
...

In the end, the most compelling reason for a company to foist arbitration on its work force is to avoid liability and public exposure that might result from a court case. But if a company wants to avoid liability, blocking workers from court isn’t the best way to do that. The answer is to create a fair and lawful workplace, the best possible workplace, for everyone who contributes to a company’s success and to give workers a voice."

[Is there an equivalent of "forced arbitration" in Oz?]

What colour paint? Razz

It's definitely harassment, bordering on sexual assault, unless of course you were into it. Wink

It was green paint and was at least water based! No I wasn't into it but I did enjoy washing it off. Wink
