I think he’s probably just not that great a batsman. It takes extreme skill to avoid being sucked into those sorts of shots. It’s frustrating but test batting is just a very difficult art.

See - Khawaja’s just done the same thing. 2/104.

I'm less concerned about Bancroft's place in the side than I am about Khawaja's. I said I thought the latter was extremely fortunate to be in the side about half a dozen failures ago. Khawaja is not a good fielder and doesn't bowl either.

Deano would accuse me, as he accuses Simpson, of wanting batsman to be completely shotless, but it doesn't seem sensible to me for Bancroft to continue wafting when he's wafted and missed a few times in quick succession, especially so close to lunch. Is he suffering ultra-delayed concussion from Bairstow's headbutt?

Credit where it's due. Philander is a superb swing bowler - much like Terry Alderman. Not particularly quick but deadly accurate.

His dismissal of Bandy was poetry in motion. He bowled 3 in succession, outside off, seaming away, which were watched and left. The batsman HAD to be ready for either the in cutter or another leg cutter, but on the stumps. It was the latter and too good for Bancroft. I'm not sure VP has an in cutter, an Alderman speciality.

12 overs, 6 maidens and 2/10 tells the story.

Warner bowled by Ngidi for 63. 3/117.

Re. Khawaja:

He's on thin ice. Hard to see him not being replaced by Handscomb, if he fails in the second dig.

Alas, Handscomb is beneath thin ice. Sigh. Is Maxwell good enough at Test level? (Yes, not a practical question, but...)

Here comes the mini-collapse. Let's hope it can be halted. Another sigh.
The one comfort is the knowledge that the opposition (doesn't matter who it is) also will have mini-collapses and maxi-collapses. Defensive batting technique is an endangered art. (That's putting it charitably.)

He's the only other batsman in the squad.

By the way, mate. No team has ever been 0/900. It's cricket. It's the nature of the game. Bowlers take wickets. Others are run out.

"Defensive batting technique is an endangered art." ? Did you not watch the first hour of play, today ?

^^^

I realize the squad is short on batting. (DW better not get suspended.) That's why I said my Maxwell musing was not practical.

Did I not express my happiness effusively enough for you in my first comment?
But they do need to apply themselves for sessions and days, not for an odd hour here and there. The Marsh brothers have the necessary grit.

[And, upon reflection, I see we're now talking about application and grit, which still isn't technique. I wouldn't bet my life on the defensive technique of any current Test batsman, even if I could convince him to block and leave as much as possible.]

Thank God no team has been 0/900. But don't worry, the administrators and curators are working on it. It's all connected, actually.
...

And just like that. Mini-collapse becomes maxi-collapse.

Who is the match referee?? Is it someone with a spine?

Rabada probably deserves to go, but a spineless referee will probably not give him what he deserves. This is the advantage of the whole team, coaches, and country whingeing in unison.

7/72. Disappointing after 0/98.

Kagiso Rabada smashed through the middle order with 5/13.

Now, 9/243. Tim Paine 36*, Josh Hazlewood 10*.

And that's the total. 243.

Neither good nor bad. They have to bat yet.

SA 1/39 at stumps. Rabada 17*.
The good, the bad and the ugly all on display for Rabada.

What he did was clearly much worse than what Lyon did. Morkel may get a more fitting farewell to Test cricket.

Clive Eksteen and Altaaf Kazi can join the Hall of Shame.
At this rate, a bigger hall will be needed.
