France win 2-1.

As with AFL, the game opened up in the second half as fatigue set in.

A somewhat lucky second French goal, in off the cross-bar (and then spinning out again), but there were many other anxious moments for the Socceroos defence.

The Socceroos' first goal, within 5 minutes of France's opening goal (itself the result of a video penalty), came through a careless or panicked periscope handball, with Jedinak again displaying machine-like efficiency from the penalty spot.

It wasn’t careless. It was deliberate. Why he thought he’d get away with it is a whole different question.

Anyway, Sainsbury, Ryan and Mooy played well. A number of the other boys looked like minor league players. Jedinak led them well. I think we need to tank for a few draft choices - get a couple of those fast, balanced guys from the far south of France, maybe. When does Pogba become a free agent?

It's disappointing to lose but I would have taken a draw or a narrow one-goal loss at the start of the game.

This is far from the debacle we witnessed against Germany in our opening WC match in 2010.

We lacked attacking power, but for the most part our defence held up well. Maintain the intensity we displayed today and we're chance against Denmark and Peru.

The likelihood from past World Cups is that - assuming they’re the best team in the Group - they’ll rest guys in the last Group game. It’s a bit of a poisoned chalice getting the best team in the Group first, for that reason. That said, the French looked reasonably disorganised for large parts of that game, so maybe it’s even harder from here than we think.

Of course, the penalty against us was poor - our defender got the ball first. Still, that’s always what happens to the “small” nations at this tournament.

It was an Oscar winning performance by Hernandez.

Carried on like he was shot.

Argentina 1 - Iceland 1
Germany 0 - Mexico 1
Brazil 1 - Switzerland 1

The traditional powers will not get it all their own way this Cup.
The referees, however, will continue to be biased in favour of the traditional powers.

Good thing, too. I'm waiting to see how the refs go in the Italy v Netherlands blockbuster.
