He played his role well. Think he gives us a lot more effort at ground level than Reid and his kicking was very good - both for goal and field kicking. I am not sure that Reid should be getting a game ahead of him in a hurry if he can maintain these characteristics. Melbourne will be a stiffer test this week for the entire team.

Reid (even at half speed), is a better option than Mihocek. The question is, will his body allow him even to be half speed?

I prefer Mihocek to Reid. He is far more powerful and mobile. Sure, he's not as tall as Reid, but with fewer tall power defenders, this is not so important, especially while Cox is there to attract 2 tall defenders.

One semi-decent game in the VFL and he's in?

WTF!

Wonder how Sier, Wills & Fasolo feel about that?

If Wells is in for Varcoe then who is out for Mihocek? hopefully Appleby?

What of Maynard?

Mihocek in his "one semi-decent game" was best on ground for the second week running and is usually in the best players every week. He can play forward or back, is strong as an ox, has great hands and is a very accurate kick for goal. How about waiting till you actually see him play before you bag him. Sier and McLarty are both out injured so I don't think they will be too worried about Mihocek getting a game.

First of all, breathe.

I didn’t say he can’t play and am fully aware that Sier and McLarty are injured but am pointing out that other players have been better for longer and have been unfortunate not to be called up.

Btw I’ve watched him play several games and initially had concerns regarding his skills but seen some improvement of late in this area.
Just wondering how you liked Mihocek's game on Sunday?? Not bad for a 1st up effort was it??

Looked lost early but kept presenting and was rewarded for his effort.

The obvious challenge for him will be to keep it going, if Moore comes back into the team then we could potentially utilise Mihocek in defense too.

Long way to go though, remember McGough?

The bottom line is you can't judge a player on his performance in one game. You need to see Mihocek perform over a number of games to form a judgement. That's why if possible, Mihocek should hold onto his spot for a while yet as long as he performs his role for the team. McGough had major issues with his kicking, pace and performing his role in the team. Once he created a name for himself by winning the ANZAC day medal, opposition teams focussed their attention on him and found his weakness and exploited it for their advantage. I'm not sure what weaknesses Mihocek has? He's a good kick, good decision maker, covers a lot of ground on the football field and can play forward or back. That makes him difficult for an opposition team to negate. Time will tell but I feel on the basis of one game that he has a bit more to offer than Reid as a forward (but less to offer than Reid as a defender) in that he's a better kick at goal and covers more ground. Over time it can go the other way as E says and we will all wonder why we were all excited by him.

I haven't judged him over 1 game. I have watched him in several games for Port Melbourne over 2 years and in almost every game in VFL this year. I have yet to see him play a bad game. He is a superb kick, a good mark, reads the play very well and proved he can handle AFL standard. He has been playing against big bodied men since he was 18 playing CHB for Burnie Dockers when they won the Tasmanian State premiership. If he was going to show any signs of being a 1 game wonder, it would have happened long before now. The thing is he is 25yo, very strong and very rarely gets injured. Reid is 29yo and frequently injured. I know who I'd be pushing for a regular spot for the future.

Whether Mihocek becomes a successful AFL player or not, only time will tell. But seriously, how anyone here can even contemplate us dropping him after his 4 goal debut is mind boggling. I'm sure some of you are taking the piss. Rolling Eyes

If Reid was fit and firing and had missed the week through suspension rather than injury, I'd more than contemplate it.

However, Reid is not fit and firing and there's no value rushing him back 1 week before the bye when Mihocek did such a good job first up. So for mine, him playing is a no brainer. He's a blue collar player, just stick to the process and that's all he needs to do. If he doesn't kick the goals he'll help create them.

Exactly. Talk about a bunch of pessimists. If they can't get excited about that debut, I give up.

It has nothing to do with Reid, the kid played a great game and we would be insane to drop any player after their debut, let alone a wonderful debut.

So consensus seems to be you all want Mihocek to get another game (its officially a love story at this point). I think Reid's health will make this entire debate moot (since it doesnt look like he is fit to return).

It doesn't actually matter what the consensus is on Nick's - Mihocek certainly gets the next game. It is beyond (sensible) debate.

The jury remains out; one swallow doesn't make a summer; etc etc. But he gets game two against Melbourne.
