I think we did well.

Would have liked to have had a pick in the teens for a shot at Richards or Stacevich.

But I like the players brought in.

Strange we passed on pick 61. We must have a DFA coming in?

I'd say we got exactly who we set out to get given our draft picks, so I would say the club will be very happy with its draft picks. Could we have done better? Yes, if we could have got Brander or Balta before our next live pick after Stephenson, but it wasn't to be. We have a serious lack of of KPP's which will test us before next year's national draft. Maybe the rookie draft will throw up a couple of tall prospects.

Yeah I thought we might have invested that pick in Joel Garner.

Murphy looks a player, feel we went early on Brown and there were better players available at 50. I assume they have something up their sleves for the rookie draft.

Or salary cap issues.

Or list cloggers; no names, but's let's just say their initials are Blair, Sier, and Mayne.

Hard to know but it looks like we have done pretty well to me.
Both Murphy and Brown are very young in this draft and will need some time but I expect those two will both play senior footy in a year or two.
Stephenson is a safe bet.

FWIW, I can't believe how well the Tigers did. Seems like everyone of their picks was a steal.

We have lots of good midfielders, All our tall defenders are either in their late twenties, vulnerable to injury, also required to play on the forward line or in the case of Reid all three. I am sure Jaidyn Stephenson is a going to be a great midfielder but I can't believe we picked him ahead of Fogarty or Naughten. In a couple of years time our only tall defender will be McLarty. I have no problems with the other two picks. Murphy is a bargain at pick 39 and Tyler Brown is supposed to be at least as good as his brother

^^Our two tall defenders will be McLarty and Moore. That's enough. Backups will be found anywhere as they always are.

Alternatively we play one genuine key back and fill the rest of the positions with ~190cm players of which we have plenty. Chances are this would work better in the modern game anyway, where a player's ability to move and intercept is far more important than body on body work - so little of it and less and less as games get bigger, peak pointlessness coming in the Grand Final.

The game has changed. AFL quality utility players are far better at holding down a key post than players who are only picked for their height. Those days are gone, a tall actually has to be able to play to get on the field, or even on a list nowadays. That's why we saw so few taken early in this draft.

It's a huge relief that we didn't fall into old habits of thinking we had to go tall and drafting players who would never be anything. The talls available at 39 and later were far worse than what we got.

^ I hope your right on McLarty, he hasn’t played an AFL game yet so to be fair we don’t know if he is capable at the level. Given Naughton is a big Collingwood fan hopefully we can coax both he and Ed Richards from the bulldogs in 2 or 3 years time.

I’m not convinced of your strategy to play 190cm key defenders, I remember Josh Kennedy kicking 5 on Goldsack before half time this year. Goldy was then moved onto Darling who kicked another 2 on him. The strategy is fine against small forward lines but fraught with danger against 2 big key forwards.

Watched hi lights of Stephenson and Murphy and both looked OK

Big leap to AFL and Stephenson kicked swag of goals in the footage

Made me think on another recruit who came to us after a 10 goal haul
in GF —-our man of Steele

Mids yep backs yep but failure in front of goal last few seasons have hurt as much as leaked goals by opponents
