Post subject: Article 13: Hine, for God's sake pick a HYBRID playerReply with quote

When in doubt between a midfielder and a key position, pick a hybrid whom was touted as a number 1 pick only 6 months ago such as Darcy Fogarty. So for the uninformed, what is a hybrid??

* A player whose generally 191cm+
* can play forward, back or midfield
* athletic
* yet to peak and whose upside is unchartered

Since 1990 in the modern AFL era the Pies have actually never drafted a hybrid player. Pendlebury doesn't qualify as he is essentially a 97% mid fielder. Other club's current lists have been ubiquitous in this area:

Crows:

* Mitch McGovern

Carlton:

* Charlie Curnow

Essendon:

* Jay Laverde
* Kyle Langford

Fremantle:

* Nate Fyfe

Hawthorn:

* Jack Gunston

North Melbourne:

* Mason Wood

Port Adelaide:

* Justin Westhoff

West Coast:

* Jack Darling

Western Bulldogs:

* Jake Stringer (originally)

Yes you can argue that picking best player is the go, however in an even draft, surely the hybrid player with X factor is a risk that our recruiters should embrace.

Darcy Fogarty would be a very good pick up, but you can't make up any hard and fast rules here. Cerra is an absolute gun midfielder and if he is available at pick 6 you would have to think twice before you pass him up.

De Goey?

Listed as 191cm and 91kg. Serious potential forward and midfield if he's fit and focused.

Goldsack.

193cm and 93kg. has played forward and back, small and tall, is fast and full of heart. Ultimate utlilty

Howe misses out by 1cm at 190 but can play forward, back or wing, as can Oxley.

This would cast serious doubts on your claim that we have never drafted a hybrid player

I'd be very happy if Darling, Gunston, Westhoff (...) were played in the midfield against us.

Doesn't Blair have a younger brother who can play a bit?

he'd barely pass 191cm if he was on his brothers shoulders Wink

That's fine - we could have them wear a costume and field a pantomime Blair, possibly in the ruck.

I'm not sure what your asking really - there are plenty of players that have played forward back mid and over 190. Goldsack probably the most successful.
I'd settle for the best tall that isn't injury prone - hasn't Fogarty had knee problems?

Without putting a name to it, aren't they more like mid fielders who can successfully play as a third ( or even second ) tall. The true ones are special and pretty rare.

You need a tank, skill, good agility and lateral movement, speed, footy brain and strong overhead ( for mine, Kouta and Pav were as good as anyone in this role )
I'm just not sure there is one in this draft.

Some people are talking like Fogarty is the chosen one already but he still has plenty of work to do in a number of areas ( and I'm a fan )

I'm all for picking a " hybrid ", just as long as he's a good one.

The hybrid players you use as an example are generally underperformers (Nathan Fyfe execepted) and often criticised by own supporters.

I prefer we draft guys that will be elite in a certain role rather than serviceable in a number of roles.

Scharenberg definitely qualifies. Degoey probably does as well. Some of the others you've listed don't (Gunston for instance. Moore fits the bill as much if not more. The height requirement is too arbitrary, we're talking flexibility in role, that's what matters not height).

Historically these are dangerous types to pick. Much like a tweener in basketball (a C or PF who's not quite big enough for the role so has to spend time at other positions), there is the risk that they never really find a position at all, or never quite excel.

With the AFL game changing dramatically, these types are more in vogue than they have been. It is quite possible a 191-193 could play as a key forward or key back and still retain the tank and agility needed for the midfield. A player who is able to play multiple roles is very useful. But at 6, you want a player who is elite in at least one role, flexibility is a bonus but not what you draft for.

Definitely don't think it's a type we need to specifically target. Best available every time when picking as early as 6. We already have quite a few players who can play multiple roles (Moore, De Goey, Howe, Scharenberg, Cox, Reid...)

* Howe was traded for.... never drafted
* DeGoey was drafted at 187cm and thankfully grown a tad.
* Concede you on Goldsack albeit he doesn't fit the mid field criteria
