Jake Kelly; now 22 years old and in Adelaide's best 22.

Passed up as a father-son recruit after spending some time with the VFL the year before. Jake was passed on in the national draft, but the Crows gave him a chance with pick 40 in the rookie draft. We only had one rookie spot to fill that year. We re-drafted Gault with pick 10.

As a 189 cm defender, would he be in our best 22 right now?

James Stewart; now 23 years old and in Essendon's best 22.

This one's a little trickier. If the question was, would you prefer Grundy or Stewart, you take Grundy. And I could be wrong, but I think the rules were different and we couldnt use the picks traded in? We drafted Kennedy and Broomhead.

As we know, he was traded to Essendon for pick 77 last year. I wonder if we could have offered the pick we accepted for Cloke (76)? That pick went to the Lions with Frost.

As a 198 cm forward, would he be in our best 22 right now?

We know we made a mistake not going after Liam Picken when he was a youngster. I believe a dispute between Billy and the club led to Liam being undrafted by Collingwood. But what a shame seeing him become a premiership player for another club, when it could have been with Collingwood.

And although not Father-Son recruits, I believe Sam Weideman and Ed Richards will join the names of players that should be at Collingwood in 2018.

I watched Jake Kelly in the GF against Richmond. He's tough but he has a definite problem with his kicking. You just don't know over time whether Jake can iron out his problems to become a constructive player in potentially a premiership team like Adelaide. Liam Picken managed it at the Bulldogs so time will tell with Jake.

In the case of James Stewart I think we made a mistake and watching Essendon this year hasn't changed my mind. OK, he doesn't have any ground speed, but he makes up for it with a good football IQ and is a good mark and kick on goal. We're crying out for forwards at the moment and James Stewart would have provided an alternative option to Moore on our forward line.

Jake Kelly was a Massive Stuff Up. I was shocked we did not take him in his Draft Year as he played well in the 2 VFL Games he Played for Us.

Not Sure for James Stewart as he is NOT a KPP as some think he is

Liam Picken was passed over by everyone and only got a gig at the Dogs as a Rookie when Williamstown offered to pay his salary.

For several years he was a grunt tagger and only produced worthwhile results when Beveridge came on board.

Mistake? That's a lot of hindsight.

Stewart? I prefer grundy, thanks. GWS took him with a second round pick and gave him away to Essendon, which he nominated as his preferred club. He wasn't worth a second round pick and we had no option to get him from GWS as he was pissed with us for not nominating him father son and wanted to go to Essendon.

Kelly? Grunt midfielder who can't kick.

Everyone will have different opinions on this one and we still need more time but right now, FWIW, I am in agreement with Dave on this one.

We could have pumped more senior games into Barry Mitchell and got his son.But commonsense prevailed. It is all spilt milk.Overall the Collingwood football Football is almost unparalled in history with father and sons success . Geelong may be close. Just look to the future with the names Daicos and Brown and others and enjoy the ride. Craig Stewart was one of those involved in the horrendous Richmond-Collingwood poaching wars that nearly destroyed us both. But in the end we got Travis Cloke as a result so one to us. It isn't going to happen with Stewart and Kelly so leave it be.

Kelly is a scrubber
Stewart a handy Mark Richardson style player at best

For those whom may not remember we actually took J Ramsay with the pick we could have used on J Stewart.

Hmmm. I just think we could do with them right now. Both better options than White/Keeffe/Schade who we've recently delisted.

Sure, they're not Jakovich and Carey, but I think both Kelly and Stewart would be in our best team right now.

Time will tell if we live to regret it. But it's true that there's better players out there. (But we dont have them either).

Kelly returned a very record against small forwards. Its an area that has proved to be our Achilles heal in recent times.
His kicking ain't great but at least beating your opponents in the first place, is a good start.
I would be extremely surprised if we couldn't have found a spot for him in back six this year.
Having said that, all clubs win some and lose some. Comes a time, you just gots to move on.

historical moves are a bit dicey - you make a mistake with one player and you can argue that it would improve your drafting opportunities in later years. I think a bigger mistake was not identifying Graham Wright as a class recruiter. I don't think our recruitment department has been bad but Hawthorn is a step above. Or perhaps they have been under resourced as indicated

Picken played one good year, steward is no good but Kelly hurts.. Especially now that Derek Crime keeps releasing videos trying explain his idiotic trade of our second rounder..I just hope Kelly turns out ordinary without Lever in the team...
For what it's worth I believe we should take EVERY father and son, it's too much angst otherwise..

Come to think of it, Essendons Jackson and Zach Merrett are related to one of our clubs all time great players in Thorold Merrett. His great nephews I believe.

From the 1953 premiership side; The Richards brothers, Weideman and Merrett now have descendants currently playing in the AFL. None for Collingwood.

Being related to a past great doesn't automatically make you a star; see Chris Bryan. But it'd be nice to have Zach Merrett at the club wouldn't it? We can always rookie draft his brother. Cool

Jayden Hunt is another with Collingwood blood; 5x premiership player and team of the century back pocket Harold Rumney is his great-great uncle on his dad's side.

Unlike Weideman who didn’t give a stuff if he played for Collingwood, Ed Richards is a diehard Pies man. I expect it’s only a matter of time before he gets to the Holden Centre.
