The big difference under the new CBA is that category A rookies can be selected for senior games - no longer restricted to nominated and promoted rookies - at least that is how I read it.

The new list rules from 2018 are:

16. Player Lists – 2018 - 2022
(a) Each AFL Club shall maintain their Lists during the Term as follows:
(i) The number of Players on the Club’s Primary List shall be not more than 40 and not less than 38;
(ii) The number of Players on the Club’s Category A Rookie List shall be not more than 6 provided that a Club must not have more than 44 Players on their Primary List and Category A Rookie List at any time;
(iii) The number of Players on the Club’s Category B Rookie List shall be not more than 3.
(b) Any amount paid to a Rookie Player in excess of the base payment payable to a 1st year, 41+ choice selection shall be included in the relevant AFL Club’s Total Player Payments. For the avoidance of doubt, the minimum base payment payable to a 1st year, 41+ choice selection shall be excluded in the relevant AFL Club’s Total Player Payments for each Rookie Player.
(c) Players included on a Category A Rookie List shall be eligible for selection in a Match from 1 November 2017 notwithstanding any contrary provision in this Agreement or the AFL Rules. Prior to 31 October 2017, AFL shall make all necessary amendments to the AFL Rules so that they shall provide for a Player on a Category A Rookie List to be eligible for selection in any Match played after 1 November 2017.

Thanks for the info, MM. Rule (b) looks highly relevant to the context of this discussion, i.e. it seems that going without rookies does not really help clear salary-cap space. It seems that going with only 38 primary-list players does help with salary-cap space, though, so doing that and stacking the Rookie List seems to help. [I started thinking about this because some commentators claimed in the live coverage that our passing at the draft indicated we are really, really tight on salary-cap space. This claim seemed unconvincing to me, because the minimum salary for a late draftee is not much more than for a Rookie (it looks like only a few thousand dollars difference), but rule (b) seems to indicate they are right about it making a difference.]

My reading is a National Draft draftee is (2 years x) base payment of $80,000 (after pick 40) included in TPP plus match payments and bonuses. I read clause (b) as saying that for a Rookie Draft draftee on a base of $75,000 plus match payments and bonuses ONLY the amount above $80,000 is included.

Therefore, if spot 40 on the primary list is left vacant the club saves base payment of $80,000 plus match payments and bonuses on TPP. If the Club goes with an extra rookie then only payments above the $80,000 get included in TPP.

$80,000 is not insignificant if we are pushing the limits as the Club has admitted in the slideshow that Channel 7's Tom Browne live-tweeted looking through the window of the boardroom.

Yes, I agree. Your list indicates we're already up to 39; otherwise, there'd be the possibility of two vacancies, saving $160,000 and getting close to making up for half of the Mayne Mistake.

Oxley is the interesting case. because of his existing contract. If (just making up a number) it's $100k and we rookie-list him, then $20k goes to our TPP. But if (say) Carlton rookie-list him before us, at the minimum, which you tell me is $75k, then we'll have to pay him $25k and presumably have $20k on our TPP, all for the joy of watching him run around in navy blue. Won't that make everyone here happy?

He'd be running around at Cramer Street, so it'd be quite funny.

Rookie and Pre-season drafts today.

Expecting a ruck and some KPP mature-age depth plus Oxley and Ransay.

Keegan Brooksby, ex GCS, (either in draft or as a delisted FA) was one I thought met our needs.

Jaidyn Stephenson just punched in a 6.44 in his first 2k since being recruited Friday. He can definitely run #pies @CollingwoodFC https://t.co/qpEePxgI9b

King of the time trial: Tom Phillips. Flipper loves this time of year. In second place was Levi Greenwood, with Josh Smith close behind him #FOREVER https://t.co/MQw6grOVs7. [This could be a tweet of old news as WL’s training report contains different info for 27/11/17 time trial.]

Did Sidebottom run today?

There will be 43 selections, as attached, in today's NAB AFL Rookie Draft.

All Clubs eligible to participate in the Pre-Season Draft have advised the AFL they will not be participating, and as such, there will not be a 2017/2018 Pre-Season Draft. https://t.co/RcoMFT82Af

Carlton has notified the AFL this afternoon that it NOW intends to have a single selection in the Pre-Season Draft. At this time, they are the only club that has nominated to be part of this draft, before the Rookie Draft.

Flynn Appleby

Speaking of impressive key backs, the draft stocks of emerging defender Flynn Appleby continued to rise on the weekend, with the Rebels backman blanketing Bendigo Pioneers star — and possible top-five pick — Jarrod Brander. Appleby kept Brander to just 1.1 from three kicks for the entire game to be named in the Rebels’ best for his sixth consecutive game. https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl-draft-watch-carlton-north-melbourne-in-the-frame-for-slider-brayshaws-run-amok-in-tac-cup/news-story/c1ad71ec20cc67170e6c959850f30214

Flynn Appleby the best shutdown defender in the draft, joining Collingwood. Kept Kayle Kirby to just the one goal and Jarrod Brander to 4 disposals and 1 goal. #AFLDraft per Knightmare

Brody Mihocek

2017

Brody Mihocek (Port Melbourne)

Age: 24
Position: General Defender
2017 VFL Numbers: Averaged 18 disposals, 9 intercept possessions, 7 marks (4 intercept), 4 score involvements and 86 Champion Data ranking points from 14 games.
WE profiled Mihocek this time last year, but he was ultimately snubbed despite strong interest from Collingwood and GWS. But the gun defender has done little over the past 12 months to keep him out of draft contention — in fact he’s enhanced his chances. Mihocek had 17 or more disposals 10 times this season, including an impressive 20-touch, seven-mark performance in Port’s thrilling grand final win over Richmond. The boy from Tassie, who stands 192cm and 97kg, is a ready-made AFL defender that’s in the perfect age bracket to slot into a professional AFL environment. https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/the-matureage-vfl-stars-that-afl-clubs-should-consider-at-the-2017-national-and-rookie-drafts/news-story/0d3d29eafd0874d643d1974bc26b25a8

2016

Brody Mihocek (Port Melbourne, 23, 192cm, 97kg): Collingwood and GWS are rumoured to be interested in the ex-Tasmanian and the son of 13-game Essendon player Jack. Key backman Mihocek had two seasons with Werribee, crossed to Port Melbourne this year and won the best and fairest, his marking a feature of his game. Captain Toby Pinwill was even moved to compare him to legendary Borough defender Sam Pleming. Mihocek more than held his own when standing Travis Cloke late in the season, but he also showed he could play as a forward. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/leader/localfooty/best-vfl-players-in-line-to-be-drafted-to-the-afl/news-story/57290b5a4d1bff2f61ebab8a47c2e19c

OP updated for Rookie Draft.

Given Ramsay is training and not picked up in rookie draft, I assume he must have been another secret signing and is #40 on our primary list.

Unfortunately, Jackson Ramsay was not redrafted this evening. Ramma has been a much-loved figure at the Holden Centre since arriving at the end of 2012 + will always be a friend of all at Collingwood #FOREVER https://t.co/HGnn1w7w2F

Except for the concept that Sidey could do what Dangercat and Dusty can do. Totally wrong.

We had a midfielder who could do that, great body player, very good overhead, his name was Dane Swan, not Steele Sidebottom.
