Did I say that the senior coach ignores the advice of the strength and conditioning staff? He'd be a fool if he did. All I said was that the senior coach is in charge. Within the structure of the football department the assistants are delegated to run largely automonous sessions with players all with the approval of the senior coach who oversaw each appointment of his assistants. The players themselves are free to do extra sessions if they want. While none of us are privy to all the detail of all the training and conditioning which goes on both on the training track and behind closed doors, the above quoted passage is mischievous to what actually goes on at the club. |

You didn't say he ignores the conditioning staff's advice, you said he decides the training loads. And I said I doubt it. Perhaps your idea of "decides" is different from mine.
I find it a bit strange that you acknowledge we don't know all the details of their training and conditioning, but are still so certain that this player's statement must be wrong and furthermore must be mischievous. The statement seems quite harmless to me.
I'm not sure why you're reacting so strongly to any perceived criticism of Davoren. The only one being potted with no evidence is the player --- by you. Even if we ignore the player's comment, White's statements suggest the same thing. I wouldn't swallow everything CFC media serves up, but do you think all this stuff with White is just a fantasy to distract us? |

I like it that we're doing a lot of boxing. Best preparation a footballer can do. |

Haven't we heard that (more footy-focused) before?

I recall that sort of thing being said a few years ago, which raises questions...
Is this all just talk?

We've always been a club that's used the footies pretty much from day one. The thing that's probably a little different at the moment is ... we've sort of jumped straight into competitive drills, even a lot of the running's been competitive, pairing up with someone who'll play a similar sort of role to you, ...

Quote: | WHEN it comes to pre-season training, we have come a long way from the days of the "no footys before Christmas".
Malcolm Blight tried to bring this edict back during his brief time as coach of St Kilda in 2001 but pretty much from the time the game moved towards full-time professionalism more than 20 years ago, the balls have been out from the first day of training.
...
"Chad Cornes and Daniel Motlop ... could not kick on their left foot. ... using the other side of their body was not part of their weaponry and as their coach I couldn't allow players like that to be one-sided.
"So, over the summer we worked on everything and they became efficient, if not brilliant at it. I remember Chad kicking a great left-foot goal one day then turning and waving to me. But as a coach, you're never satisfied."
...
The sports scientists are ever present at footy clubs, but coaches suggest there might be less creative tension between them at this time of year. One coach suggested that Essendon's Joe Daniher might take 300 shots for goal at a specialist session at this time of year, whereas once the games start, he would be allowed "barely half that much" during the week.

I saw our new fitness leader last night walking along High Street Northcote, just past the Terminus Hotel @ 6pm.
He looked really fit, nice set of guns with a full back pack.
I wonder if he had walked from the Holden Centre to where I spotted him on the bridge? |

He has also had to slightly change his body – adding more weight to his frame and improving his strength – to cope with the demands of the position.
"I've always found myself dropping weight through a season and becoming a bit too light," Crisp said.
"Yeah I can keep running, but sometimes in one-on-ones and with contested footy I've been pushed off a little bit too easily.
"With the new gym program and the running we're doing out here with Kev (new strength and conditioning manager Kevin White) it's more explosive stuff and that's been the focus. So if I can hold my weight a bit heavier and maintain that towards games I'll be laughing."

Couple of observations from training...
Kevin White is a gun. Has done a v good job of training the guys with a massive focus on competition, power running, ball work, and skill work u dee pressure and fatigue. Hard to watch at some times, but v impressive.
Is building our players into warriors.
In contrast, the demons looked to have v simplified training drills up the road. Maybe I missed the key drills, but straight running to goal lines, then arm in arm running in packs - please explain the benefits of this - all looked quite amateur compared to our loads.
The only diff being that demons still look to have bigger and more mature bodies.
Our first 22 prob stacks up ok compared to most, but our size drops away rapidly after this, with the mosquito fleet of aish, Daicos, Blair, Thomas, brown, brown, stepho and Murphy making up the numbers. |

That does sound border-line farcical. It's a bit strange. Their fitness guy is Dave Misson, who's highly experienced. I wonder whether such people have in effect a use-by date. After all, it doesn't seem that there are clubs fighting each other to try to persuade Buttifant to take over their high-performance planning. |

You can thank the reduction in interchange rotations for the different emphasis in running patterns which explains why fitness experts have been coming and going at most of the AFL clubs these days. |
