Post subject: NBA expanding anti-Tanking measures - Should the AFL?Reply with quote

In something that the AFL should consider, NBA is now treating the bottom three teams equally when it comes to draft picks and plan to expand the number of teams that can get lottery assistance from 3-5.

Briefly, it used to be that the bottom 15 teams get lottery balls (each spot you fell gave you better odds), but only the first three picks were done by lottery (so if you finished last you were guaranteed a top 4 pick even if you lost the lottery).

Now they are giving the bottom 3 teams exactly the same 25% chance of getting the first pick (so there is no difference in the bottom three). Also expanding the number of lotto picks to 5 so that more and more often, teams who finish in the middle of the bottom will get top 5 picks (and finishing last only now guarantees you a top 6 pick).

Its interesting and it might work. The goal is to ensure that thew system rewards crappy teams that try.

Its a bit different in Basketball because one player can make a huge difference.

I would like to see our own model changed so that the bottom three have an equal chance of getting the number 1 pick and everyone in the bottom 5 have some chance.

My system is as follows:

1. The bottom 5 get a chance for number 1 (25, 25, 25, 15 and 10)..
2. The bottom 6 get a chance at 2 (same odds among the 5 with a chance)
3. The bottom 7 get a chance at 3 (same odds among the 5 with a chance)
4. The bottom 8 get a chance at 4 (same odds among the 5 with a chance)
5. The bottom 9 get a chance at 5 (same odds among the 5 with a chance)
6. The bottom 10 get a chance at 6 through 10 (same odds among the 5 with a chance).

I don't think you need to worry about tanking after that.

Its also fair because ninthmond shouldn't get the number 1 pick, but they might get lucky and get the 5 pick.
