The 2017 Manchester Arena bombing was an Islamist-extremism-inspired terror attack in Manchester, United Kingdom. On 22 May 2017 a shrapnel-laden homemade bomb was detonated as people were leaving Manchester Arena following a concert by the American singer Ariana Grande. Twenty-three people were killed, including the attacker, and 250 were injured.

One problem with this sort of failure of ordinary logical thought processes is that it tends to lead some people to the rather stupid proposition that we might somehow be safer if we all had guns.

People don't need any real "motive" for these atrocities. They just need guns, ammunition, a bit of anger and a degree of alienation. Looking for a "motive" is apt to deflect from the real point - whatever was happening in this tool's brain, it couldn't have translated into this carnage without the weaponry.

I can find plenty of massacres without guns, but I cant find any that lack motive or where motive was irreverent. Guns are not the only elephant in the room.....

One always needs a gun for a gun atrocity. It's not complex, really.

It is. I'm glad you agree.

Guns serve no useful purpose in the hands of most humans but can do an appalling amount of harm with minimal effort. They should be generally unavailable in any civilised society.

Yes, I also think bombs shouldn't be available in shops. Razz

....sure,

.....so how are we to achieve this world wide gun free utopia...

...... a few examples come to mind .... but they always end up with one group of people with guns getting the guns off other people with guns, followed by an authoritarian government full of bureaucrats banning things and people waving red flags with farm implements on them.

I took 'generally unavailable' to refer to the situation in most developed countries – none of which, as far as I can tell, are communist dictatorships.

How, in the city with more security cameras than any other in the world, did he get all these weapons & ammo into his room?

Honestly who would look twice at a bloke carrying a suitcase in a hotel?

He allegedly smuggled them in over a number of days and I assume the high powered rifles would have been disassembled within the suitcase.

The simple reality is assault rifles were designed for military purposes and should never have been allowed in the hands of civilians.

Honestly if I could be bothered I reckon I could blow away any card carrying NRA member when it comes to the gun control debate with just my words but what's the point?

Unfortunately to many Americans are idiots and most voted for Trump so expect him to do bugger all and if Sandy Hook can't lead to change nothing will.

Yes, like in Australia, for example.

Generally unavailable' usually means banned for civilians, at least in the minds of socialists. Laughing

This does not apply to Australia , Germany , Austria, UK, Switzerland, all have relatively high rates of gun ownership and low gun massacre rates and sensible gun laws. But they are generally available to qualified people.

America has a gun problem and an ammunition hording problem, but its also a cultural and attitude problem with guns. If you've have ever had to explain the rules to visiting American shooters at an Australian gun club you get an insight to how some of them think.
Simple habits like not always having ammunition in the house or guns disassembled and locked up are incomprehensible to them.

I'm not even sure this qualifies as satire.

http://www.theonion.com/article/americans-hopeful-will-be-last-mass-shooting-they--57093

Quote:
Expressing a sense of guarded optimism that the latest incident of gun violence that left 58 dead and 500 injured in Las Vegas would be a turning point for the nation, Americans across the country confirmed Monday they were hopeful this would be the last mass shooting before all such occurrences stopped on their own for no reason at all. “After something as horrific as what happened in Las Vegas, we’re all just hoping that now these terrible shootings will stop once and for all without circumstances changing in any way or any of us taking even the slightest amount of action in response,” said Harrisburg, PA resident David Snyder, echoing the sentiments of tens of millions of citizens from coast to coast who told reporters they were confident that, after living through the most deadly mass shooting in modern American history and taking no material steps to change gun laws, reevaluate safety standards, increase access to mental health care, or even have a national conversation about how mass shootings could be avoided in the future, tragedies of this kind would at long last come to an end.
