From the Murdoch rag this morning:

"COLLINGWOOD wingman Tom Phillips has retained his title as the Magpies time-trial king.

The third-year midfielder managed to hold a defiant Josh Smith and rookie Flynn Appleby, the cousin of professional golfer, Stuart, in the 2km fitness test.

Phillips won the corresponding time trial before Christmas, as well as the 2015 and 2016 editions, dethroning Magpies ace and long distance specialist Steele Sidebottom for the title".

and from Big Footy:

Training Report: Monday Jan 8, 2018

A cool, cloudy morning for the first day of 2018 training. Early thundery showers cleared in time for the time trial.
Not Training: Jamie Elliott and Levi Greenwood.
In the time trial Smith and Phillips led from the start and the only query was how long Phillips would sit in second place before exploding away.
Smith led after the first lap, but there wasnt much in it. Phillips made his move on the AAMI Yarra pocket and opened up a 100 metre lead very quickly. At the Olympic Blvd end he put on the gas again and literally sprinted home in 6 minutes flat.
Here are the times:
1. Tom Phillips 6:00
2. Smith 6:07
3. Flynn Appleby 6:15
4. Steele Sidebottom 6:16
5. Jack Crisp 6:17
6. Max Lynch 6:18
7. Nathan Murphy 6:19

8. Ben Crocker 6:28
9. Jarryd Blair 6:33
10/11 Jaidyn Stephenson & Jack Madgen 6:35
12. Jordan DeGoey 6:36
13. Tom Langdon 6:39

14. Lynden Dunn 6:44
15. Travis Varcoe 6:46

16. Brody Mihocek 6:50
17. Matty Sharenberg 6:51
18. Tyler Brown 6:52
19. Mason Cox 6:55

20. Tyson Goldsack 7:01
21. Sam McLarty 7:16

22. Kayle Kirby 8:14

From Mazzarjo's Training Report

Laughing I'd beat Kirby and I'm a 50 year old drunk... that's very poor. My nephew just ran 7:02 in the Swan Districts time trial.

who gives a toss about time trials. i'll be more concerned if Smith or Phillips overtake Kirbys talents on the field. I'm sure the Kirbinator will put on enough jets on at the right times to evade many a defender and slot thru majors

That used to be true but unfortunately I don't think it is anymore. 10-15 years ago, guys with Kirby's power and talent (but lack of stamina) could carve out a long career at the top level. The game has changed and small forwards need to be able to cover long distances in order to play their role in 'team defence'.

If they can't play their part in the team defence, then they are going to leak more goals than they score. And they won't get selected.

I really hope Special K can improve his stamina. I'd love to see him make it.

Players are not required to run time trials in a game - they may be required to run up to fifty metres at any one moment - time trials prove nothing other than someone can run a certain distance better than another. If the time trial were doubled in distance then it may be that Phillips comes last. However, that would not mean that he is unfit or incapable of fulfilling his role in the game.

^^^

Correct Npalm. Castagna, butler and Rioli ( bar one game ) hardly kicked a goal between them during the final series but the opposition had no answer for their REPEAT pressure efforts.

Heard Mathews say more than once " we live in an era where a ( small ) forward who doesn't apply great defensive pressure every week, needs to kick 3 goals a game just to break even "
Seems about right to me. ( cue the Blair back handers )

By extension, that's why stoppages are now so important. If you can first neutralise a contest in your own forward line, at least you then get a chance to make something happen from a stoppage inside your own 50.
Simples !

You have seen him tackle right????
NOBODY is going to go running off if they get in his reach and within 6 months players are going to start checking their peripherals for him as they approach the loose ball - when he lays a tackle it sticks and HURTS.
Speed and stamina are important but NOT the be all and end all.

Kirby has a tonne of natural football talent and it's why he excels at VFL level but unfortunately at the next level of AFL a lack of endurance generally gets exposed because the game is not only quicker players need to work harder to make repeated efforts to make themselves available as an option for a teammate and they have to chase the tail of an opponent looking to do the same.

Kirby will never be an endurance animal but let's hope he can eventually shave off 45 seconds to give his talent more opportunity to shine in the AFL.

No, as I don't watch VFL games.

Although I have to agree with previous comments. Today's game requires players to run their asses off..even ruck men and CHF need to be able to cover the ground quickly.

I would think that Cyril (also a lethal tackler) would be able to cover 2kms in less than 8 minutes.

To put it in context, the world record for a 2k run is 4 min 44 seconds
