This is not a new thought but... Ben should never make anything against NZ because he should be playing for them (if not for the Bristol Prison's First XI).

I forgot to mention that Stokes also caught the NZ captain and got out their best batsman himself, as well.

"Ben Stokes may not be able to bowl in the rest of the second Test against New Zealand after experiencing a recurrence of a knee problem.

Stokes reported pain in his left knee as he completed his second over in Hamilton. While he remained on the field, the England management reported the injury would be assessed before a decision was made ...

Stokes has long had to manage his left knee. He underwent surgery on it in May 2016 after tearing cartilage while bowling against Sri Lanka ...

It may be that his relative lack of mobility contributed to his failure to cling on to a chance offered by Tom Latham on 66."

Cricketer Ben Stokes' father critically ill in hospital

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricket/cricketer-ben-stokes-father-critically-ill-in-hospital-20191225-p53mt5.html

"Stokes was due to join his teammates in a Christmas Eve training session in Centurion, 45 minutes north of Johannesburg, but will instead be with his family.

It is not yet known whether the newly crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year... will be in a position to take the field at SuperSport Park on Boxing Day.
...

Stokes senior, 64, played one rugby league Test for New Zealand in 1982..."

[Later reports say Ged's condition has improved.]

Ben Stokes has won the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for the ICC player of the year.

[Sadly, it's hard whenever he achieves anything on the cricket field not to think of what happened in Bristol.]

Hilariously, that award relegated The Great Pat Cummins to mere Test Player of the Year.

Miller:

Botham, Flintoff, Stokes - who is England's greatest allrounder?

https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id/28483448/botham-flintoff-stokes-england-greatest-allrounder

"Of the three, no one averages more with the bat than Stokes' current mark of 36.12, or less with the ball than Botham's final figure of 28.40 - while Flintoff didn't even finish his Test career with that ultimate seal of allrounder status, a batting average (31.77) higher than his bowling mark (32.78 ). In fact, by that rationale, none of the trio has a greater record than the great forgotten member of England's all-round elite, Tony Greig (40.43 and 32.20), whose defection to Kerry Packer cut short a career that might otherwise have deserved to be mentioned in the same breath.

Compare that range of numbers to the single-discipline mastery achieved by many of the greatest allrounders from other nations: from Garry Sobers and Jacques Kallis with the bat (57.78 and 55.37 respectively), to Richard Hadlee and Imran Khan with the ball (22.29 and 22.81), and you might even try to argue that they all failed to achieve their full potential. Though perhaps not to their faces …"

Stokes has apologised for swearing at a spectator on day 1 of the 4th Test against S. Africa. We await ICC action. Media report he said, "Come say that to me outside the ground, you f***ing four-eyed c***."

cricinfo:

"Use of an audible obscenity during an International Match is considered a Level One offence - the least serious - and carries a penalty of one demerit point. Stokes does not have any active demerit points, so the penalty - and any accompanying fine - would amount to little more than a slap on the wrist.

In the unlikely event his words are considered a threat of assault, however, then he could be charged with a Level Three offence. If that charge was upheld, Stokes would be hit with five or six demerit points and would be facing a suspension.

It is also possible his words will be considered 'conduct that brings the game into disrepute' which would leave him open to anything from a Level One to a Level Four offence. Level Four offences are the most serious.
...

The ECB may also be underwhelmed with the incident. The sponsors of Test cricket in England are Specsavers, while it is not so long since Stokes helped England win the Leeds Test in partnership with the bespectacled Jack Leach."

"Ben Stokes has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct..."

Slap on the wrist.
