When we were little we'd go the the synagogue as a family. Hasn't been done for many a year these days but is a family get together

Goes for two nights although in Israel it is for one night.

Happy New Year WPT.

I see "the festival marks the first day of the 10 days of repentance, where Jewish people repent for their sins of the previous year".

Are 10 days enough for a regular Nick's poster like yourself?

Happy Rosh Hashanah to you too, WPT. Smile

PM, aren't you getting them mixed up? The Day of Atonement is Yom Kippur, I think, which is next week. I should know; 24 hours of fasting as a teenager wasn't much of a holiday. Razz

Cheers Pa. Day of Atonement is in about 10 days time otherwise known as Yom Kippur.

Part of my repenting was being a Collingwood supporter (I had no choice in the matter) for the term of my natural life.

Like religion you have to suffer in order to appreciate.

THis is from something I wrote a few years ago about my family & how we became Colingwood supporters:

.......

".......Id like to say Ive been a fanatical Collingwood supporter since I was knee-high to Barry Price. Being the youngest in the family I had no choice.

Mine was a typical Collingwood upbringing I suppose: My parents migrated from Europe escaping the holocaust & concentration camps arriving in Terra Firma in 1950. My parents came to Australia as DPs: Displaced Persons & my father was sent to Bonegilla near Albury-Wodonga. Initially, Dad found Australia a strange & scary place. Hed never seen white bread before (good for picking up broken glass, he later learned) didnt speak English & in the mens shower block in Bonegilla saw Lithuanian men with SS tattooed under their arms but thats another story.

Dad shifted to Melbourne to reunite with Mum. Three children were hatched & trying to make ends meet & be able to work they needed a baby sitter in our East Brunswick home. Mrs Mack was the baby sitter. According to family lore Mrs Mack spoke like sergeant major when she said if youre going to be living in Melbourne youre going to need a football club to barrack for: Collingwoods your team or Thou shalt barrack for Collingwood

So it was spoken.
So it was heard and,
So it was observed
....."

You love the sense of ancient ritual and meaning in Judaism. What do you like about the sense of ancient ritual and meaning in Judaism so much? Don't worry about it, like a sacrificial offering to assuage the British entertainment industry's collective guilt and shame for turning a blind eye to or condoning such behaviour on a widespread basis for the past half-century.

No worries! I was interested by your statement that it's an important day for Christians does your family celebrate any of the old Hebrew holy days? Mine placed them at the front and centre (making up for our lack of observance of Christmas and Easter, although our Passover rituals probably resembled some churches' Easter rites in their focus on the Last Supper). All except for Hanukkah perhaps they just wanted an excuse to not give us any presents, lol. Crying or Very sad

Cheers Mugwump.

These days it's being with family (a bit like Christmas - which will be at our place this year) - you know mixed marriages: my wife's an Essendon supporter. We still say the besssings before the meal & translate it (this year for my youngests boyfriend)
