Post subject: Strangest year ever!
|
Can't remember a year like this year.
Totally thought we would go no where.
But we have gone somewhere.
A year of absolute misery with injuries and crap umpire calls.
Yet, we have made a prelim.
Really annoyed at Bux and Ed.
But things have changed with courageous decisions.
But even with crap kicking at goal we have got somewhere.
Well done to the Club. Well done!

I wrote this on the game day thread MC:
"During the third quarter, when I thought we may have kicked ourselves out of it and may get tired legs in the last quarter after the trip to Perth, I cast my mind back over the season......
We've had some bad moments - Broomy breaking his leg, Dunne and Shazz with their knees, Treloar with his hammies, Trav Varcoe losing his sister.
But I was thinking that even if this turned out to be the end of the road for us this year, gee we've had some wins - JDG has come of age, Jaidyn Stephenson is the Rising Star, Brodie has realized his potential, Sier has emerged, we discovered Mihocek, Chris Mayne overcame his woes of last season, WHE has played his best football so far, Phillips is emerging as an enormous endurance player of great merit, Sidey has got even better, the backline has matured beyond its young years with Crisp, Maynard and Langdon (who had to over come significant injury) coming of age..
No matter what happens next week, this has been a marvellous season. All credit to all the players and coaches. So very proud to be a Magpie supporter of fifty years standing."
A strange year indeed, with a mixture of calamities and blessings. |

It's been an enjoyable journey.
Sure there's been tough moments, but to see a team who's been in the wilderness for the past five years suddenly start to emerge as a contender again has been special to watch.
Whatever happens next week, we should be super proud of what we've produced this year. I haven't felt this optimistic about the direction of the club for a few years. _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023

2002 was a bit like this year. We came out of nowhere to make the grand final. That side was cobbled together with players from other clubs although some of them were a bit older than they his current group. Probably why after 2003 it went downhill for a couple of years. _________________ Living in Geelong, barracking for the 'pies! |

Walked out of the MCG after the Hawthorn game where we were so terrible, convinced I saw the wooden spooner
And then R2, GWS, Coniglio takes it away from us late, Broomhead snaps his leg, and it's all "gee they were brave" and all that horrible stuff that goes with us
Then R3, Carlton kick the first couple, and people are talking about the potential for an 0-6 start...
And from there...a Prelim?

I have never understood how people could think that was a serious chance, unless Carlton & GC suddenly vanished from the competition. To be mediocre is easy; to be the very worst team in the competition takes a lot of effort. |

Certainly looked like it that night, bottom 4 for sure...

Not "convinced I saw the wooden spooner" but about as disillusioned as I've ever been. One more bad loss away from calling for Buck's head. Never expected to come this far, even before that loss. Probably didn't start believing again until we beat nemesis bulldogs but was convinced we were the real deal after demolishing Melbourne. _________________ Formally frankiboy and FrankieGoesToCollingwood. |

Yeah rnd.1 they looked like bonafide lower half of the eight material.
Rnd.2 I'm thinking some improvement, but another season of honourable losses more than likely.
Rnd.3 I'm thinking some well at least we beat Carlton so the season might have some upside.
Most importantly, we didn't drop games to shit teams in the lower half of the eight, for perhaps the first time since 2011. Losses like those hurt many mid-table teams vying for 7th and 8th spot this year. _________________ M I L L A N E 4 2 forever |

It was such a stinker of a night, I agree with being disillusioned
Mason was getting Bronx cheers, I think everyone was fed up at that point
and it was only round 1
Insane to think that was the apex of "Carlton have a brighter future than Collingwood" in the media...

Good point, we were unbeaten against teams outside the 8
We nailed that game in Brisbane we would have dropped last year, and then we got out of jail against Freo _________________ We just got nutted at the clearances... |

No one and I mean no one thought we could make it to the last saturday in september. In particular, with our massive injury toll.
So and I mean so unexpected. |
