We only finished above 5 teams. But a look over the draw for the year reveals that we only played each of them once.
Bugger me, why do these things happen to us?
The season played out and of course we only play all the worst sides once each. Contrast this with Port who got to flog Bris & GC twice.
So I'm not whinging or making this as some form
of excuse for another disappointing year. It is just an observation of how an uneven draw can result in the current system. Five crap teams and we never double up on any of them.

Yeah, I get that. But not beating anyone twice may be explained by not playing any of Freo, Gold C, Brisb or NM twice.
I just think it's our stupid damn luck that the 5 teams that ended up being crap, we only played each of them once. I can't be bothered checking, but I wouldn't be surprised if we were unique in that.

At the same time there is nothing gained making finals from a soft draw and being smashed week 1. Look at Melbourne, if we are beating them then they will be smashed by 5th.

The fact we lost to all the teams from 6-12 except West Coast as we played them here not there says we finished about where we belong

We were in the middle 6, not the bottom 6 for the purposes of factors the AFL considers when they make the FIXTURE. There is a press release that covers this when the draw comes out. If we finish 13th this year then we may end up with a slightly better fixture, but of course the this year's strong teams may not be next year's strong teams so the AFL can always get that part wrong even with good intentions.

We finished 12th last year and that doesn't do you any favours with the following years " schedule "

We finished 13th this year and in theory, that should afford us a softer draw ( whatever that means )
Richmond finished 13th last year and that has been very good for them, so far.
Winning gives you cobfidence and a belief in the process. As a youngish team, I will happily take a soft draw next year, even if repeat wins against bottom dwellers isn't a true reflection of how good ( or bad ) you are.

It means we'll play:

- Two teams in the 13th-18th column twice,
- One team in the 7th-12th column twice; and
- One team in the 1st-6th column twice.

Although as teams improve and decline inevitably, the definition of an 'easier' draw can be widely subjective.

Wehave to play 4 teams interstate at least. So 2Qld, One say Port and one Fremantle. Throw in a Sydney team. I can live with that.

That's why it was good we finished bottom 6.

Richmond finished 13th and got double up games against Freo, Brisbane and Carlton.

A slight tinker to their game plan and they finish 3rd.

Hopefully we cop North, Carlton and/or Brisbane, Gold Coast twice next year.

You're wrong! Melbourne won't lose in the first week of the finals. No way.
