Apologies for a new thread, I did a search, and the. Went back 8 pages, I'm sure there is a thread about car dooring cyclists.

This is such a simple fix from the Netherlands! Such a great idea!

Wouldn't it be easier for them to just drive on the left?

Its a good idea, especially in the Netherlands where there are too many cyclists to swat. Im not sure how well the "Dutch reach" might work in a country where the average height of women is less than 6 feet 2, however.

What is really needed in the Netherlands is a Dutch cap, preferably one with lights and sonic warnings, to be worn by the speeding cyclists who, umbrella in one hand and mobile phone in the other, routinely threaten to total pedestrians on footpaths and in public squares.

huh? why the height thing?
id think the only thing stopping you reaching across from the other side of your body (ie your sitting in the right hand seat, use your left hand instead of your right hand to open the door, so you are forced to glance over your shoulder) would be an injury or a fat gut!

I don't know much about Dutch techniques, but, just saying, as far as road safety goes, a reach seems like a better option than a rudder.

HAL, that's an extraordinarily lowbrow comment. I expected better from you.

Oh, probably - i wasnt thinking through the ergonomics, just imagining that short arms might make it tricky, but also recalling that the Dutch are among the tallest people i've ever seen (and I'm 6 foot 2 or so) !

Or just rig things so cyclists aren't riding past parked cars with people trying to get out

How do you do that when the bike lane is next to the parking lane?

Move the bike lane to the middle of the freeway, maybe?
