Comment: Will concussion injuries eventually destroy the NRL and AFL in Australia?

The results of a US study into brain injuries from sport hasn't had any ramifications for the Australian codes yet - but you can be sure they are only just around the corner.

An examination by neuropathologist Ann McKee into the brains of 202 deceased American Football players revealed 117 were posthumously diagnosed with CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) - including a staggering 110 out of 111 players who played in the NFL.

Yes, that's 99 percent of deceased NFL players tested. AND THEY wear HELMETS!!

St Kilda All-Australian defender Sean Dempster hung the boots up early this season because of medical advice on head trauma and promising Brisbane Lions defender Justin Clarke retired at the age off 22 last year for the same reason.

It's unrealistic to believe the death of certain sports in Australia is imminent but what happens if it's proven that playing certain sports is more dangerous to health than alcohol and tobacco?

Several experts already claim this.
