In the Coach's course he was said to excel and has form as West Coast assistant in their 2006 flag and Freo till at a flag

He was in the running for Bulldogs but pulled out and Bevo got the gig

Collingwood's most valuable player in the finals in 1990.

There would be some irony to such an appointment.

An untried or an established--we have tried the untried so do we get an established one whoever we can

Ironical also an untried (assistant for part of 1986) got us 1990 flag

Our kicking might actually get worse (never thought that could be possible).

If we don't have a rabbit to pull out of a hat (Clarkson or similar) then I don't mind this line of thinking.

Someone at the helm outside the club hasn't happened since Mick in 2000. Its a long time in comparison to other clubs.

No ex Pie has coached a flag since 1958 and our 2 flags were from non Collingwood people (an honourable mention for Tommy Hafey)

We seem to go down same monotonous track and never learn

Just a bit on Sumich.

Sumich served as coach of South Fremantle in 2000 and 2001, taking his club to a grand final in 2001, which the club lost to East Perth. He accepted a role as an assistant coach at the West Coast Eagles when his premiership teammate John Worsfold was appointed senior coach in 2002. Sumich served in this position for ten years until 2011, which included the club’s 2006 premiership victory. The Fremantle Football Club announced in October 2011 that Sumich would be joining the club as an assistant coach under Ross Lyon. His change in clubs was described as a "defection" and a "shock move".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Sumich

West Coast great Peter Sumich believes the experience gained during his first season at the helm of WA’s under-18s program has added another string to his bow as he chases a senior AFL coaching appointment.

Sumich has been reinvigorated by working with the State’s elite junior talent, having quit his assistant post at Fremantle at the end of last year for fear of losing his love of the game.

The 49-year-old missed out on the Essendon coaching job when Kevin Sheedy moved on in 2007 and was overlooked by West Coast in favour of Adam Simpson in 2013.

But Sumich still harbours a burning desire to one day take the reins of his own AFL side.

“It’s been good. I made the choice to come back to understand kids because I’ve still got an ambition to coach at AFL level,” Sumich said.

“That’s what I want to do, so understanding this program, the way kids develop and the way they think is something great for me.

“That’s the key because if you’re going to go into an AFL side as a coach, you’re going to be dealing with probably 60-70 per cent your list being under 24 years of age if you’re building a list.”

Sumich led WA to three wins from four matches at this year’s national championships, with the Black Swans’ campaign ending on high note when they knocked off highly fancied Vic Country by 29 points at Etihad Stadium.

AFL recruiters had widely tipped WA to struggle.

Also interesting opinion on Craigs nephew....
Sumich urged both of WA’s AFL teams to take a look at East Perth product Brandon Starcevich, who finished the carnival on a high with 22 disposals, eight tackles and five clearances. What first jumps out at you with Starcevich is his power in the contest. He wins the ball at the goal face but also delivers a powerful "don't argue" and will barge through tackles with force and if unable to break the tackle, handball to a target without going to ground.

His courage was also notable, keeping his eyes on the ball, running forward with the flight, taking the mark and having the strength to hold onto the mark as he got hit hard.

The other impressive element against Victoria Country was his ball use. Nine of Starcevich's twelve kicks were effective, with a combination of long kicks and short kicks where he lowering his eyes and hit the target

and maybe someone we should be looking at...
Peel Thunder product Aaron Naughton was named WA’s MVP for the championships and was ranked by Champion Data as the top key defender.

Sumich told 6PR on Saturday he felt Naughton was a good chance to feature in the top 20 picks in this year’s national draft, while pacy bottom-ager Ian Hill could go even higher in 2018.

Naughton, a 194cm key defender, earned the praise of Sumich with the dual AFL premiership forward backing him to “pinch” a senior WAFL game at the Dockers affiliate by season’s end.
