What kind of people are you talking about? Aren't you usually honest?

Interesting question (and one that doesn't necessarily have an easy answer): given that this is an American story, is it really our society?

It's potentially us in the not too distant future.

The level of callousness and disengagement needed to do what they did in that vid is insane. It was like they were watching it on TV, but it was real. Shocked Confused

I ask because in some ways America is very much like us culturally and in some ways it very much isn't. I'm taking it as assumed here that we wouldn't look at a video of some atrocity happening in the Democratic Republic of Congo and say "what is wrong with our society?". And then that raises the question of what we actually mean by "our" society to begin with.

how about society in general? that kind of callous behavior of teenagers would shock me no matter where it was. how not one got in there to help him is mind boggling. google group or gang bullying for any country, yoüll get results. The poster didnt tag it as a locality thing, and its not. its just disgusting human behavior, and the question is, why dont they have the moral decency to get in there and help him?

Oh, no doubt that's the most relevant question here. I'm just asking more in the context of this thread, i.e. does this indicate a problem with our society, or is it happening in another society that is somewhat alien to ours?

Leaving that to one side, I wonder how many went along with it to impress their mates and how they would have reacted if they had been on their own. Teenage boys as a group are not always the most caring types.

14-16 year old boys watching a (although they couldn't know it) disabled man drown.

Empathy isn't my strong suit but if I did that at that age I'd crank up the Delorean to go back and kick my own arse

I think (or at least hope) that it's unusually callous behaviour; but this kind of passive cruelty probably isn't anything particularly new or extraordinary.

Pretty sure the thread title is "is society getting worse", no mention of "OUR". And if the video was from the Democratic Republic of Congo I'd feel the same way about it, wouldn't you?

Pelican dies after two men seen kicking, stomping it in vicious St Albans attack

Just the last in an increasing list of horrific acts of animal cruelty! We could help society by ridding it of oxygen thieves like these!!

Don't you think there's an implied "our" there when people use the word "society" in that way? (Perhaps I'm wrong, it just seems that way to me.)

In response to your question, I think the answer is yes and no; there's a sense (for me and I think a lot of people, but not necessarily everyone) that when something happens here or in culturally similar countries, it's something that relates to "us", whereas it's easier to feel distanced from things happening in geographically and culturally remote places. Of course that dichotomy is something that should be interrogated and critiqued, which is what I'm trying to do here – my questions are genuinely intended.

It's sickening. Animal cruelty is such a shocker but is that worse now than it was?

Our future psychopaths & criminals (that aren't in parliament or run corporations)
