So, with the single greatest midfield performance in the history of preliminary finals, our little champion has hit 750 disposals for the season. In the history of our Club, that puts him behind only Swan and Wayne Richardson. He is only 5 behind Wayne, as we speak. If he gets 20 disposals next week, he will surpass every Collingwood season disposal tally except the Great Dane’s wonderful 2010.
This week, his season disposal numbers went past Beams’ 2012, Pendlebury’ 2011, Shaw’s 1990 and Swanny’s 2012 and 2013.
He has had at least 24 disposals in all but 2 games this year. He has had 30 or more 14 times. |

Apparently he was the first player ever to have 40+ disposals in a prelim. _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023 | |

Eagles tagger sets his sights on star Magpie

In round 17, Hutchings clamped the Pies' most dangerous midfielder, holding him to an equal season-low 18 touches as the Eagles silenced their critics at the MCG.
They played a game of cat and mouse in the qualifying final, with Sidebottom starting across half-forward to throw the Eagles' plans out of whack.
He was Collingwood's best on the night at Optus Stadium, but West Coast would have taken his 27 disposals, and Hutchings is setting himself for the task again.
"There will be that talk," Hutchings said.
"I'll wait again until Wednesday or Thursday, because it could change, but he's been playing really well in finals."

Steele resolve: the September specialist
https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/steele-resolve-the-september-specialist-20180922-p505fw.html
Quote: | ...
‘‘I think he’s as good as anyone I’ve seen going around,’’ said Maclure of Sidebottom’s finals prowess.
...
Sidebottom doesn’t conform to our vision of a super finals player. He can win his own ball, but he’s most damaging outside the contest.
Whereas most of these September heroes were combative, physical players, Steele is one of those footballers with a ludicrous – and for the opposition fan – infuriating ability to find himself in space.
...
Still, there are teams that have tagged Sidebottom, with varying levels of success. Collingwood’s grand final opponent, West Coast, have assigned Mark Hutchings to Sidebottom in their past two encounters. In the home-and-away game, Hutchings subdued Steele in what was a key to West Coast’s groundbreaking win over the Pies at the MCG.
The Pies were ready for the Hutchings tag in the qualifying final. They started Sidebottom at half-forward as a means of dealing with the expected tag and, as we know, he was the decisive influence in turning the match towards Collingwood before West Coast’s midfield took over the final 15 minutes.
Why does Sidebottom shine in spring? First of all, his hands are super clean – regardless of whether the ball is slippery.
Second, he has a massive aerobic running capacity, which enables him to find space and get to contests. Third, he has an extremely high footy IQ and is exceptional with the ball in his hands.
Fourth, like all top line players, he’s a competitor.
Temperamentally, he’s a relaxed country lad (from Congupna, near Shepparton) who gives Collingwood people the impression that little fazes him. One can only guess, but I suspect that the composure we see in finals is a reflection of his laid-back nature.

Sidey was the only player to be ranked BOG by the umpires 7 times in 2018. The next in line was Mitchell (6) and, after him, no one else was ranked BOG more than 4 times.
He is now 8th all-time on the list of Collingwood players with most Brownlow votes, behind only Swan, Pendlebury, Buckley, Thompson, Regan, Daicos and Picken. And when the votes are adjusted to account for the weird voting systems that have been in place from time to time, Sidey moves up to 7th, well ahead of Picken. |

The 2008 draft is interesting really
The top 10-15 draft picks that year have all had varied careers some decent quite a few not so much
At the moment Sidey is one of 2 to register 200 games thus far making him very durable Hannabery has 208 games to Sidey's 202
Brownlow wise he's a fair way behind the top vote getter
Hannabery 106 (208 games 1 X BF winner 1 X AFLCA winner 3 X AA nominee 3 top 10 Brownlow finishes)
Sloane 94 (177 games 2 X BF winner 2 x AA nominee 3 top 10 Brownlow finishes
Beams 88 (168 games 2 X BF winner 3 X AA nominee 3 top 10 Brownlow finishes)
Sidey 84 (202 games 1 X BF 1 X AA nominee 1 X Brownlow top 10 finish)
But this weekend he has the chance to be the only 2 time premiership player |

The best thing about Sidey is that he’s playing career-best football and is probably about halfway through a great career, whereas the couple of other decent footballers from the 2008 draft that you might once have wanted in your team playing second fiddle to Sidey on Grand Final day (Hannebery and Sloane) are nearly cooked. |

Ah, well. First in something.
Congratulations to Mr (Most Of ) September.
Taylor Adams came second. The only players to poll in the Grand Final were Adams and Langdon.
COLLINGWOOD’S Steele Sidebottom has won the Gary Ayres Award for the best player of the 2018 AFL finals series.
Sidebottom finished on 23 votes, ahead of teammate Taylor Adams on 18 and West Coast's Jack Redden on 17.
Sidebottom did not poll in the 2018 Toyota AFL Grand Final, but polled votes in the first three weeks of finals; five in week one, 10 in week two and eight in week three.
The Magpies midfielder continued his outstanding form from the season proper which saw him finish second in the Brownlow Medal behind Hawthorn's Tom Mitchell.
West Coast midfielder and Norm Smith Medallist Luke Shuey polled maximum votes from Saturday's Grand Final after racking up 34 disposals, nine clearances, eight inside 50s and a goal against Collingwood.
Every round, the AFL coaches vote for the best players from their game. The coaches vote for five players, giving them a mark from 1-5. The maximum a player can score is 10 (with five votes from both coaches).
WEST COAST v COLLINGWOOD
10 Luke Shuey (WCE)
8 Dom Sheed (WCE)
6 Taylor Adams (COLL)
4 Tom Barrass (WCE)
2 Tom Langdon (COLL)

It looks like the coaches agreed exactly on the votes. I think that may be a first. Or else one of them didn't bother. Who knows? Or, frankly, much cares? |

So, for the record, in 2018 he had:

46 rebound 50s
109 inside 50s
102 clearances
21 free kicks
24 Brownlow votes
250 contested possessions
55 1%ers
17 goal assists
and was the Coaches' Association's Gary Ayres Award winner for player of (almost all of) the 2018 finals. |
