Post subject: IF Grundy goes down, Cox is last ruckman standing.
|
I have noticed lately, some posters sledging our big Yankee Mason Cox. But, I tell you this, if, heaven forbid, Grundy goes down for an indefinite period, our last man standing is truly, Mason Cox. I find it hard to accept why some on here are so hard on our big American Pie, bloody hell, four years ago, the guy barely knew our game existed, give him a go. Hes still learning the ruck caper, sure he makes mistakes, but jeeez, hes still learning. As our own late Lou Richards often said, "Big men take time to develop "and how right Lou was, he was spot on. Sandilands took a few years to establish himself, so how about we give Mason some slack, give him a go, I cannot fault his tenacity, he tries damn hard, cut him some slack. Face it, if anything happens to Grundy, we are going to need him hugely. Now that's a sobering thought. _________________ Poverty exists not because we cannot feed the poor, but because we cannot satisfy the rich.

We need Cox now, never mind what happens without Grundy. The Big Yank ought to be in the starting 22 every week. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

One could have made the same arguments for keeping Witts on our list....relying on a yank import to be our main ruck in case of an injury to Grundy is a bold move by the club _________________ "The last thing he expected WAS THE FIRST THING HE GOT!!!!!"

Not all gloom and doom. White can ruck. Then there's McCarthy and Lynch finding their feet in the VFL.
Witts would have been good backup for Grundy if Grundy went down, but Witts is much better off playing at GCS where he is the primary ruckman.
Meanwhile we are better off playing both Cox and Grundy together in the same side. Just can't believe that Cox in the forward line doesn't offer us more than playing Fasolo at CHF. |

Moore would be best replacement for Grundy - however, that means we are without any tall forwards at all on current form. White is a pinch hitter. Cox just doesn't seem to have the endurance and speed (when needed) to match some of the other number one ruckman in the AFL - yet. If there is some work put into his endurance would help. But you are correct, Cox is the only one that could take over if we didn't want Moore to carry the load. _________________ Toby for President |

I just don't want to think about Grundy going down, not over breakfast anyway. |

Cox would be a fine replacement for Grundy, his value at centre bounces is where he is truly valuable. Similar as someone else said, to Witts in that regard. _________________ Get back on top. |

Spot on. If Cox is to make it AFL level, it will be as a ruckman, not a forward. |

And Cox's value around the ground ?
And his endurance ?
And his around the ground footy nous ?
And his real worth when the opposition start roving his hit outs ?
He is certainly the next cab in the rank but one I would prefer not to hail right now. |

Who replaces Howe if he goes down? And I still think varcoe will add ALOT when he returns... Ruckman are replaceable...his around the ground work is hard to replace |

At VFL level, he has done well around the ground.
His endurance needs to improve, but if Grundy does go down, Cox is the replacement and it would mean that the second ruck would do more than the usual 20% of game time in the ruck.
He is a very smart man, not worried at all about him picking up the nuances of the game.
All ruckmen will have a percentage of their hit outs sharked, but Cox from what I have seen directs his hit outs very well. |

All valid. But he can be a Witts at least, which is what we had anyway. He can't replace the grunt of Grundy, but he offers more smarts when the ball is in dispute I think. If only he could mark and nail the gimme goals EVERY time, then we would have something. _________________ Get back on top. |

According to todays Age, Grundys contract negotiations, have now stalled, for meantime. I'm now getting nervous, very nervous about this.. sigh. _________________ Poverty exists not because we cannot feed the poor, but because we cannot satisfy the rich.

I wouldn't panic yet. It's well known that Grundy has been holding off contract talks due to the new CBA agreement, which hasn't been finalised yet.
I may have misheard the news bulletin on Channel 7 yesterday as the TV was on in the background, but I think I heard that contract talks would "ramp up" in the upcoming week. _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023
