i am beginning to think that the only difference between the top team and us is their ability to prevail in the close ones. Some teams just always seem to be on the right side of the line when the siren goes.

Look at GWS, their last two games came down to one lucky break just before the siren.

is it just that they have composure where we don't, is it coaching, is it cream rising to the top or is it just dumb luck?

Last week when they played WB, it was mentioned during the call that they had lost 6 of their last 39 games at home.
So with a 85% win rate I was not surprised they won last, night on their very skinny ground.
Playing PA and WB on a normal ground would have seen them lose.
This massive HG advantage lulls them into a false sense of security by allowing a relative easy path to finals.
I'm not mistaken have lost 6/8 finals, so they definitely struggle on bigger grounds. No wonder they want more home finals.

We stole a game from Richmond last year and this season we just held on to beat the Swans. Sadly we just lost to the Giants. Overall, our record is pretty good in really tight games.....unlike Richmond.

I don't think our record in close games has been that good since mid-2015 to be honest. I recall it being far better before that.

I define "close game" as being a margin of 10 points or less either way.

The close games we've been involved since mid-2015 include the following:

Round 13 2015 v Fremantle (-7) = LOSS
Round 14 2015 v Hawthorn (-10) = LOSS
Round 15 2015 v Port Adelaide (-3) = LOSS
Round 23 2015 v Essendon (-3) = LOSS
Round 2 2016 v Richmond (+1) = WON
Round 21 2016 v Western Bulldogs (-3) = LOSS
Round 23 2016 v Hawthorn (-1) = LOSS
Round 3 2017 v Sydney (+1) = WON
Round 8 2017 v GWS (-3) = LOSS

It's somewhat concerning. I don't have the same confidence I once did when it involved close games.

Maybe with maturity and experience this can be rectified.
