If Les Norris/John William Elliott was the cab driver at the gunfight at Barkly Street then he was involved in one of the great mysteries of early twentieth century Melbourne. The official story was that Squizzy Taylor and Snowy Cutmore shot each other. However there is a persistent rumour that a third gunman shot both men, was seen running from the house, but was under police protection and was the beneficiary of a cover up.
Frank Hardy retold the story in "Power Without Glory" He claimed that "Snoopy Tanner" (who was based on Squizzy Taylor) had threatened "John West" (John Wren) after they fell out over a crooked deal and that West paid a third party to kill Tanner. This is of course denied by the Wren family and Hardy never produced evidence to link Wren with Taylor's death.
However the third gunman theory may be true even if Hardy's connection to Wren is not. Clyde Palmer, a well known sports and crime journalist in the 20s and 30s, (and the father of football writer Scott Palmer), arrived at Barkly St following a tip-off and claimed to have seen the third gunman escaping. He could not get this report published in the daily papers but he stuck to this story all his life and Scotty referred to it when the ABC television series based on Hardy's book was shown in the seventies.
So as well as getting a talented footballer, The Pies may have acquired a bloke with links to one of the great Melbourne stories. _________________ Born and raised in Black and White |
