the same topic was picked to pieces last year or was it the year before that by
a few posters on this board.
so king and all his infinite wisdom reignites what we all bloody know.
the last kick into our forward half of the ground is crucial to our means
as it gives us that shoot on goal. miss the target and we are in no mans land.
the team press is to high for our slow and indecisive un skilled players. it works
at training because they have the same running pattern drills day in day out,
the opposition on game day is a whole new wonderful thing to think about.
there are two teams out there bucks and you can only set up one of them.

Have you watched training? Exactly the same thing happens in the match sims as happened the other night against the Bulldogs. If you cough up the ball when all your players are forward of the ball, the ball goes back up the other end. You hold one or two back who can run quickly back the other way to catch the opposition running toward their goal. Of course the opposition have their fastest runners running back the other way in case of the turnover. That's why the opposition tall forwards aren't kicking any goals - it's their fastest runners who are kicking the goals. So then you hold more than a couple of players behind then ball - then you don't have the numbers to outnumber the opposition in front of your goals. All this is being played out in the match sims at training.

The coaching staff in the box on Friday would have been prepared for what happened against the Bulldogs because that's the way we train. We also do a lot of opposition analysis so our brains trust know the opposition strengths and weaknesses. The game plan that we executed worked up to about the 10 minute mark of the third quarter because it enabled us to hit the front. Also after the dogs kicked the 5 goals in a row, our game plan got us back into the game in the last quarter when we got back to within a couple of goals.

So basically in the post mortum of the game on the Collingwood web site, it was said we need to review where we position some of the players in the zoning to prevent easy goals being scored against. But that's the extent of it. To repeat what has been said here by others, every team in the competition employs defensive zoning against the opposition. We aren't doing anything radically different to any other team. Once our players execute their defensive zones better the wins will come. It's difficult though playing guys in the team with 20-30 games of experience against guys with double the amount of experience. That's why we recruited Wells, Mayne and Dunn, to gain that experience.

Bucks has said that our defence played 'too high up' at times against the Bulldogs, leaving us exposed and out of position, and this is something that the team is aware of and will try to improve upon this week. I expect a much better result on Thursday.

I wonder how fit we are in comparison to other teams.

Of all the stats I would like to see how our time trials stack up against all the other teams in the comp.

Im not saying we are slack but if its not a running "thing" then it could point to a skill "thing" or an execution of plan "thing".

You would think it would be an indicator worth exploring.

I'd say it's more an application and chemistry thing than a fitness issue.

If what you are saying is true ( although I understand its your opinion and im not sure how informed it is ) then this forum can have something to constructively talk about.

I get frustrated when the same questions get asked but not the right ones.

I don't claim my opinion is any more informed than any other mug punter who loves footy. Just think footballers need some continuity to develop confidence in each other. Compounds with guys like Schade and Mayne as they've been playing under a different system with different players.

WB took 14 marks inside 50.

The league average is 8.

Collingwood's average last year was 16.

This issue has been ongoing for a year and still hasn't been fixed.

Far too early after a single game to make such a call.

You'll make far more sense if you back up your opinion with factual evidence after about 10 rounds dude.

Excellent post. Sums it up well. Whether it works or not is down to execution and skills, but the thinking is clear enough. It is also why I would not play Elliott this week, even if nominally fit, because his match fitness is suspect. I think we have missed Greenwood's experience quite badly, too. Judging from both recent games we are not far away - just need to keep it up for four quarters.

I thought that was addressed in the Richmond game to be honest. Richmond got their goals other ways than the Joe the Gooses that the Dogs got. Thought we actually had more of them than the Tigers on the night. Although other than WHE I can't recall any specifically, damn memory.

95% of our goals in 2010 were scored that same way. From memory, I think Dawes alone kicked 40 of them that season.

Tackling was great from all three players tonight.

Treloar - 15 tackles
Pendles - 12 tackles
Sidebottom - 10 tackles.
