It acts as a moderating influence, it also blocks bills the elected government of the day wants to put through. Exhibit A, Whitlam.

What is the worst that could happen if we got rid of it?

Parties that won the house of reps would have the power to implement their agenda. They could go full on, within 1 caveat. If they go too far, the population would boot them at the next election and the other team would erase it all and put in their own agenda. Rinse and repeat until they learned to moderate their own actions rather than relying on the senate.

New Zealand seems to survive without one.

Thoughts?
The Senate is the house of review. It's a pity that those calling for the abolishing of the Senate ignore the facts that it works. The LNP called a Double Dissolution Election due to what it perceived as a Hostile Senate. Now they are pissed off that the Senate is even more hostile. How about presenting bills that will pass and not try to whack a whole bunch together to sneak them through. The ALP passed more bills through the Senate with a minority Government in one week than the current Government. Typical Liberal push, it's not working the way they want it so let's get rid of it. Good old Sco Mo will raise taxes now cause he can't pass a bill. Great, let's do it. Don't make the multinationals pay tax, let's make Australians pay more tax. What a bunch of clowns. Razz

To be clear, I'm not calling for it to be abolished, just flagging the question how things would work without it
Sorry Stui, no coffee at that time. It was a Rant after hearing that flog Bolt. Razz

Serves yourself right for listening to AM radio in the first place. Razz

So does the Queensland state parliament after abolishing the Legislative Council in 1922.

I'm sure there are better examples you could use. Wink You're too young to know about the Bjelke-Peterson regime: He makes Trump look like an honest broker.

In fact using QLD as an example is an argument for retaining the senate.

A similar system to the House ofLords is proposed in Thailand ecept the military and the Chinese Thai Bangkok upper class is guaranteed seats. The people voted against it but when they had a revote all public officials were told that if the new constitution wasnot passed they wouldn't get paid.Doctors,Police etc suddenly changed their minds.

I guess Senator Incitatus would have to go back to making a living out of racing.
