A "poll" of only 400 people with no relevant data and a question without any merit? I'm surprised they didn't shoot themselves rather than publish such unprofessional garbage.

Local councils used smaller sample sizes to decide not to recognise Australia Day.

Interesting article from the BBC.
It suggests that despite the media onslaught his base has held firm.

The reason is because people don't so much like Trump as dislike the things he claims to be against (the media, the Washington elite, foreigners and political correctness).

The interesting thing is how some people seem to allow their self-loathing and hatred of others to sway them to vote against their own interests. What they actually need is healthcare, education, welfare and jobs. What they vote for is the rather limited pleasure of seeing other people kicked harder than they are being kicked. It's curious, really.

I've met some of those people, though admittedly the ones I know are mostly employed and on a good wage. But they represent the views of communities they came from pretty accurately. Whatever they may be, they are not "Self-loathing". If anything, they hold themselves and their culture in too high (and chauvinistic) a regard.

They are smart bough to know that they have been sold out by gravy-train CEOs and politicians, who have used immigration and offshoring to break their unions, security and wages, and they see Trumpian nationalism as a way back. They are wrong because the man is a charlatan, but their reasoning is sound as far as it goes.

I know Democrats (and, at this stage, a growing number of Republicans) will do anything they can to block his agenda, but I kind of want his one success to be the wall. Let it stand as a testament to his presidency and the folly of voting for a clown. I hope it'll be visible from space.

Democrats could never land a blow on Trump, it was always going to be a self inflicted wound when the hammer fell and here it is.

Good on him. Shows that Trump has something of a social conscience under all the bluster.

Another good thing Trump is doing (may as well get it all out of the way in one go!): repealing Obama's disastrous Title IX reforms.

He always did, it's why he ran in the first place. He's a right leaning New York liberal (not leftist) who hated what politics and government had become. Politically though he's just committed suicide. If he'd tied amnesty to building the wall he might've gotten away with it, but selling out your base on core issues is a one way ticket to dumpsville at the next election.

Plenty of time to turn the ship around of course, and it just might be that he's been played by expert politicians rather than made an about face on a core issue, only time will tell, but for now it looks pretty bad.

Now that you've broken the seal and found some good things, they'll be easier to find in future. Wink

Interesting.

Quote:
No American President has ever spoken to the world like this.

In his United Nations General Assembly debut, Trump applied the disruptive, bellicose, nationalistic persona that shattered US political norms and signaled an attempt to transform America's role in the world and the international system itself.
"We must work together and confront together those who threaten us with chaos, turmoil and terror," Trump said in a survey of global geopolitics that paralleled his stark inaugural address eight months ago.
It was dark, desolate, had a whiff of authoritarianism and pulsated with threats: None of his predecessors, for instance, stood in the well of the UN chamber and threatened to wipe a country -- in this case, North Korea -- off the face of the planet. It was the "axis of evil" on steroids as the President blasted "rogue states" and trumped George W. Bush-era rhetoric to put Pyongyang, Iran, Venezuela and Cuba on notice.
"It certainly was, in many ways quite a groundbreaking speech," said Nile Gardiner, an analyst at the conservative Heritage Foundation, who praised Trump for his "assertive and aggressive" delivery and for breaking with the more "deferential" multilateral doctrine of the Obama administration.

He totally ripped off Bush with his 'axis of evil'. Venezuela's in, Iraq's out. Truly riveting stuff.

“The Venezuelan people are starving, and their country is collapsing. Their democratic institutions are being destroyed. The situation is completely unacceptable and we cannot stand by and watch.”

“The problem with Venezuela, is not that socialism has been poorly implemented, but that socialism has been faithfully implemented.”

“From the Soviet Union to Cuba to Venezuela, wherever true socialism or communism has been adopted, it has delivered anguish and devastation and failure.”

Hear hear!

I agree with most of the first part (it's easy to say we can't stand by and watch in theory, hard to know what not doing so means in practice). The rest is just low-rent Andrew Bolt stuff, which is fitting because Trump was, at the end of the day, only ever a poor man's op ed columnist.

Wokko, surely you should know that whenever socialism inevitably fails it wasn't "real" socialism.
