An interesting take on things though I do think some are getting a little carried away and jumping at shadows to a degree.

A little context on the whole Trump/turnbull/refugee thing. Stuff in brackets is my editorialising

Turnbull (Aus) signed the agreement with Obama (US) for them to take the refugees roughly a week after Trump won the election. (cheeky move by a president in caretaker mode)

In the last week, Trump issues his exec order putting a temporary halt on Muslim migration from countries on the government risk list.

Within a week of signing that order, Turnbull calls Trump to get confirmation the agreement is still on.

Trump apparently cracked the sads about the agreement. (highly likely he was blindsided )

Trump tweets that it's a dumb agreement and he'll look into it (Slap to Obama, placating the Alt Right who won't be happy)

Despite the verbal (which is not that uncommon, it's just usually not leaked) Trump agrees to honour the agreement, which includes the right of the US to vet the refugees first. (so he's going to use extreme vetting, fair call, so he should)

Personally, I'd rather negotiate with someone who yells, swears, thumps the table and even cries (had all of those) than some slimy cnut who talks doublespeak platitudes and you know will knife you first chance they get.

Saw a great comment on twitter, "Can you imagine the spray Paul Keating would have given trump?"

Now THAT conversation i would have paid to hear. Laughing

LOL. The USS Missouri and third battle group would have been sailing for Sydney , by now.

A part of the potential spray from PK, as imagined by John Birmingham.

^ yes, I think Keating would have tried this kind of soothing diplomatic tack, first, but if that did not work, he'd probably have arced up a bit.

Trump's unpredictability and lack of regard for convention is making it difficult to sift the hysteria from the reasonable analysis at the moment, but there's some interesting stuff to consider in that piece.

One thing though that he (and much of the media) has overlooked is that Trump's 'national day of patriotic barfing' is absolutely normal and something that Obama and Bush also did upon being elected. One of those things that sounds weird in isolation but less so when you remember it's America and they do cringeworthy stuff all the time. Presenting stuff like that without context is a kind of dishonesty on the part of media outlets, although I suspect it's more a case of ignorance on the part of this journalist.

Prior to George W. and friends irreversibly pulverising the stature of the US, the Middle East, and the global economy, we heard the same wishful thinking defenses.

Many people were sure, just sure, that Team George W. must know what it's doing.

"Of course Bush and co. what they're doing; they have more information than us!"

"These are successful people who have run huge corporations!"

"These are not bad people sitting around tables scheming how to wreck things!"

"These are not stupid people; of course they have a reasonable plan!"

But all the signs are there that it's the same sort of lunatic power grab, with three added features: Orange hair, even less public shame, and public chaos bombing to bamboozle the media and vulnerable.

Agreed; you're right to caution on this.

Just the promise of mammoth tax cuts, and a retreat to the USD in the midst of global uncertainty caused by Trump, could be enough to mask the chaos for a while.

And, for the record, we ought to be very clear about how good Obama's economy is. All positive indicators, including technical full employment according to many.

Thank you to Prime Minister of Australia for telling the truth about our very civil conversation that FAKE NEWS media lied about. Very nice!

Agreed, Obama took over an economy that was in the greatest crisis since 1929 and left it in a fairly healthy (it's all relative) shape, ready for rising interests rates. He was a great president. How the country that elected him could elect this gangster is beyond me.

One of the funnier things I've read in a good while.

Cleese = Genius
