Oh look, Ivanka, Eric and Donald Jnr. have generously re-donated fifty bucks that an ailing war veteran had given the Trump Foundation to help children with cancer! _________________ In the end the rain comes down, washes clean the streets of a blue sky town.

You know people can make donations under whatever name they want? I could donate in your name if you'd like
Apparently Trump is now considering withdrawing from Afghanistan too. The anti-war Left have now become proponents of perpetual warfare and quagmire deployments. I knew that whatever Trump did that he couldn't win with some people, but the guy is getting the US out of endless middle east wars and suddenly every progressive has become a hoo-rah warmonger. Bizarre. |

Appropriations unapproved. The US is in shutdown (as well as meltdown). |

You’re both right and wrong. It’s true that the US libs and Democrats have gone so nuts over Trump that they do seem to at times outflank him on the right on issues like Russia and North Korea (and more generally in the hard-on they now have for the “intelligence community”). But it’s important to remember that a great many US liberals have always been pro-war; look at the way the New York Times and other publications cheered on the Iraq War, and at the Democrats like Hillary Clinton who voted in favour of it.
On the other hand, the actual US left – democratic socialists and others of that ilk – are not nearly so reactive in their rhetoric, and many have been consistently critical of the “Resistance” and their incessant warmongering. I find that outlets like Jacobin, while perhaps ideologically predictable, will always have a nuanced and informed take on events like this – and at the very least, one unencumbered with any kind of knee-jerk anti-Trump contrarianism. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

I'll agree with you there, liberal internationalism and neoconservative warmongering are both £$%$ed. |

^Reading that exchange made me think about the language we use to classify people according to their stance towards the wider world, such as 'internationalist' and 'nationalist'.
The biggest group people of people by far consists of those who perceive life as a series of spaces, some some local, some national, some regional and some international — all at once. We know this because it's standard cognition. What's this group called? _________________ In the end the rain comes down, washes clean the streets of a blue sky town.

The US is about to enter a fourth week of government shutdown over the inability of the President and the House to come to any kind of agreement on funding The Great Wall of Mexico. Trump’s response? Drawing on emergency powers.

Expect a lot more of this over the next two years.
As a side note, it’s funny how US Trumpistas used to talk about Obama as if he was one step away from suspending democracy and becoming a full-blown tyrant. Must be some pretty serious cognitive dissonance going on for them right now. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

What kind of stupid political system allows Trumps desire to fund part of the wall to be entwined with the payment of salaries to 800,000 people.
Why should one thing have anything to do with the other?
