I'm not a clinician, but I'm betting the guy was mentally ill, possibly from drugs.

There are people who I would execute. Him, just lock him up to rot. far more suitable punishment than a quick death.

^ I never get the syringe thing - a rope, calibrated drop, clean break, instant unconsciousness. Given a dreadful crime, a clear statute which means that someone effectively chooses the penalty by choosing that crime, a due process of law, and incontrovertible evidence, it seems quite fair to me. Murder rates certainly went up after we abolished it. I suppose we will never know if they are related.

I haven't followed this closely (and I'm guessing we don't have all the information yet in any case) � but is the suggestion that he was deliberately trying to run down as many people as possible, or did he lose control of the car during the chase?

Seems like a bit of a Bayley-style psycho. Wonder if ice was involved.

It's fine to discuss how to deal with this individual crime, but any further debate about the merits of capital punishment in general may have to be moved to a relevant thread.

Given the the age we live in and after learning just weeks ago of a planned terrorist attack revolving around the area of Flinders Street you've got to wonder why there isn't a 24/7 dedicated police presence at the station with heavy weapons stored securely somewhere on site.

This would also be appropriate at other identified high profile areas of the city.

Given he was already being tracked by Police at the point he arrived at the intersection, a few police armed with assault rifles or shotguns would have had the opportunity to at least try and disable the car if not the driver.

Heaven forbid we get a terrorist in a truck or multiple attackers armed to the teeth in our city.

This should be a wake up call to authorities.
