I suppose you'll denounce this bloke as a crackpot too?.....

S. Fred Singer is a distinguished astrophysicist who has taken a hard, scientific look at the evidence. In this book, Dr. Singer explores the inaccuracies in historical climate data, the limitations of attempting to model climate on computers, solar variability and its impact on climate, the effects of clouds, ocean currents, and sea levels on global climate, and factors that could mitigate any human impacts on world climate.

Singer’s masterful analysis decisively shows that the pessimistic, and often alarming, global warming scenarios depicted in the media have no scientific basis. In fact, he finds that many aspects of any global warming, such as a longer growing season for food and a reduced need to use fossil fuels for heating, would actually have a positive impact on the human race. Further, Singer notes how many proposed “solutions” to the global warming “crisis” (like “carbon” taxes) would have severe consequences for economically disadvantaged groups and nations.

Hot Talk, Cold Science is essential reading for anyone who wants to be fully informed about the global warming debate.

Dr. S. Fred Singer is Research Fellow at The Independent Institute, Professor Emeritus of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia, President of the Science and Environmental Policy Project, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a Member of the International Academy of Astronautics. He received his Ph.D. in physics from Princeton University.

Dr. Singer has served as Vice Chairman of the National Advisory Committee on Oceans and Atmospheres; Chief Scientist for the U. S. Department of Transportation; Deputy Assistant Administrator at the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency; Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U. S. Department of the Interior; Dean of the School of Environmental and Planetary Sciences, University of Miami; (First) Director of the U. S. Weather Satellite Center; Director of the Center for Atmospheric and Space Physics, University of Maryland; and Research Physicist, Upper Atmospheric Rocket Program, Johns Hopkins University. He has also been a visiting scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars; Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology; National Air and Space Museum; Lyndon Baines Johnson School for Public Affairs, University of Texas; and the Soviet Academy of Sciences Institute for Physics of the Earth. He is the recipient of the White House Special Commendation, Gold Medal Award from the U.S. Department of Commerce, (First) Science Award from the British Interplanetary Society, and Honorary Doctorate from Ohio State University.

Dr. Singer is the author or editor of fourteen books on climate science, energy, and environmental issues
as well as the author of over 400 articles in scientific and public policy journals plus over 200 articles in popular publications, Dr. Singer has been featured in articles in Time, Life, and U. S. News & World Report, and he has been interviewed on Nightline, Today Show, News Hour, Nightwatch, and other national and international television programs.

^Given I just wrote this, hardly, because individuals aren't a preponderance of authority.

Why bother posting individuals for or against? It's like watching crackpot religious sects throw quotes at each other.

My assumption is that authority in academics would be roughly about qualification, peer-reviewed publication, appointment, recognition and representation, much like any field. Publication being work done, appointment being work acknowledged, recognition being further acknowledgement, and representation being interests represented, etc.

The climate system is broad and has a broad footprint, so its study is going to rope in various disciplines. But, because warming change is a macro theory, based on a preponderance of systemic evidence, you would need to be across that evidence from a focused position to have a serious view of the whole.

This is why on-field/near-field specialists plainly warrant weight. Macro bodies then defer to those on-field/near-field specialists.

On that basis, the weight of numbers is ridiculously in favour of warming change.

Because some on here say that it's a cut and dry issue, no debate required and that anyone who questions that is a nut job or paid off by the oil companies. Yet there are many reputable scientists who don't.

It took the majority if scientists over 20 centuries to accept that Pythagoras might have been onto something with his - the world is a sphere theory.
I hope the climate change furphy doesn't drag on that long!

^Well, if you don't know the answer yet, Skids, you don't know it's a furphy. Make your mind up.

He is not a crackpot. He is a paid agent of the extremist Heartland Institute who will do anything and say anything for enough money.

He works in the climate denial industry now, but he has previously worked in the tobacco denial industry, for both Phillp Morris and the Tobacco Institute.

You'd have to be very ignorant or a credulous fool (or of course both) to take seriously anything this discredited spokesman for discredited causes says.

The fact that the denial lobby is now reduced to citing the Singers of this world shows just how desperately it is scratching for something - anything! - to print these days.

Singer mini-bio:
Quote:

A former mouthpiece for the tobacco industry, the 85-year-old Singer is the granddaddy of fake "science" designed to debunk global warming. The retired physicist — who also tried to downplay the danger of the hole in the ozone layer — is still wheeled out as an authority by big polluters determined to kill climate legislation. For years, Singer steadfastly denied that the world is heating up: Citing satellite data that has since been discredited, he even made the unhinged claim that "the climate has been cooling just slightly."

How did I know that was coming Laughing

It's the same anytime someone speaks out against the multi billion dollar snake oil campaign. Discredit & dismiss.

So you are comfortable with uncritically absorbing paid climate denial messages from the same old warhorse who used to get paid for pretending that smoking isn't bad for you?

By the way, are you interested in some investments? Can't go wrong with these Nigerian Dictator specials. Guaranteed to make your fortune.

The debate is over. The real debate is over: how much, how soon, to what extent & how do we plan & adapt to it.

(On iPhone at wk so might be typo's)

Interesting

The scientist quoted in the article is a biologist. No meterological credentials or training. She also previously worked for the Institute of Public Affairs.
No relevant qualifications & paid by a bunch of climate deniers.
Article a biased waste of time.

And the fact that he isn't a climatologist means its ok that the bureau lied, you just swallow it all hook, line and sinker.
