The AFL has announced some rule changes for 2017, one of which is a ban on the 3rd man up in ruck contests.

Thoughts?
I like it as an old ruckman and I think it will favour Collingwood ruckman Grundy.
It stops teams like Geelong from double teaming with Blicavs and Hawthorn from having one of their spud rucks grappling at ball ups waiting for the 3rd man to come in and allows the midfielders to actually set up to anticipate the contest.
Grundy is short for a modern ruck and doesn't have a great leap but he's strong and getting stronger so as his strength and skill improves he should be able to work well with this.
Yes it will suit the beanpole rucks but that's what smart midfielders are for.

Excellent change by the AFL. Protects ruckman from the gutless snipers such as Lewis and Hodge. Blicavs at least went for the ball.

| The AFL have the pre-season draft with Clubs being unaware of any rule change for the next season possibly which may possibly affect the choice of players they choose to draft. Putting the cart before the horse, I reckon .. |

We have quality ruckmen in cox and grundy.
I think it detracts from teams with inferior ruckmen like Whorethawn, Dogs, West Coast (in 2017), etc.

Given he hasn't even played a VFL game yet we have no idea what will or wont be perfect for him.
In reality being a rookie listed KPP gives him more chance of being a complete spud delisted in two years time. |

I was expecting them to wait until just before the season started to make the changes, they got in a little earlier than I expected.

It's at least two fold.
1. Protect the ruckman from injury caused by collisions they can't see and should have to expect.
2. Make it easier for the umpires to officiate the rucking contests including when ruckman are penalised for "blocking" the person trying to be third man up.
It's a good rule, kudos to the AFL.
