According to Champion Data.

Quote:
COLLINGWOOD coach Nathan Buckley will be armed with the games top-ranked midfield in his make-or-break 2017 season, according to Champion Data.

The AFLs official-number crunchers have delivered a glowing endorsement of the Magpies prime movers using a complex formula to asses each midfielders output over the past two years, in comparison to their peers.

Led by superstar ballwinners Scott Pendlebury and Adam Treloar, the Pies have six top-end midfielders who are classified as elite or above average, bolstering claims Collingwood has the centre square setup to break its three-year finals drought next season.

Seriously, is there a clandestine meth-lab in the basement at AFL house?

Well how very insulting to the reigning premiers, and GWS, who should have been premiers, and the Swans who keep cocking it up on Grand Final day.

Melbourne's midfield will be awesome in 2017 with Lewis in the mix.

Whorethorn may or may not be dusted, depending on their recent trading.
We keep saying Geelong will crumble, but Dangermouse gave them hope.

My "complex formula" remains: get the f*cking ball FIRST, then hit a team mate with it lace out. Hopefully those on our list who cannot abide by this somewhat mind-boggling mantra have been weeded out in the last month or two....

Piedys I think we do have the "best" midfield - when you look at the individual players. But as a team they need time (and perhaps something else) to gel - I'm not sure what. Maybe luck, maybe some sort of chemistry. Look at Hawthorns midfield last year - no one would argue they weren't a very good midfield but the individual players who run through the middle get very ordinary very quickly after Hodge, Mitchell and Lewis (FWIW Rioli played mostly forward of centre IMO). As a team though they were fantastic.

Pendelbury, Treloar, Sidebottom, Wells, Adams, Greenwood, Crisp all look good individually but will they gel as a midfield group? I hope so, if not we've just got a few too many HFFers...

Well, it all seems rather surprising to me, although they have apparently taken the view that Sidebottom is a midfielder, not a forward-pocket goal-sneak - so they may be smoking something but it isn't as strong as the stuff smoked by many on Nick's.

Best midfield in 2017. That would be next season.

DTM has a valid point though.

Outside of a 31 year old Wells the midfield will be virtually the same.

To me this article just highlights our continued under performance.

I'd argue long and hard our list is no worse than that of the Bulldogs.

If Buckley can show he's the real deal then we should be aiming high next year.

Either way I don't want to hear any more tired excuses.

^^^ We should find out the answer to one of life's great questions over the next season: Which has more plodders - the Collingwood midfield or the Champion Data analysis team?

I hear in 2018 we will have the best midfield in Oceana.

We have a very good set of midfielders in the team, but whether all of them can gel together and work in a Buckley-led game plan remains to be seen. It's promising, but I wouldn't overly emphasise on it when forecasting our predictions for next year.

After all, Champion Data stated in the lead up to the 2016 season that Fremantle had the 2nd best midfield in the competition and in the end they finished in the bottom three.

On the other hand, the Bulldogs were listed as having the 10th best midfield in the competition and they ended up winning the premiership.

Our midfield came to dominate games in the second half of last season, when Grundy began to win the hitouts. That's the key to our midfield fortunes imo. If we win in the ruck then our midfielders can dominate.

V interesting subject. I'm in two minds about this...

1) what happend 2 years ago - and to a lesser extent - 12 months ago, can have v little bearing on next season's performances. Taking injuries out of the picture - which is why Fremantle didnt live up to expectations with Bennel, Fyfe, Mundy & Sandi all going down - development and form drop-offs due to age cant be estimated. If Brayshaw & Petracca both play full seasons, there's no way they are the worst. Far from it. This is ignored. Similarly... theres no way Hodge, Mitchell & Lewis will be as effective as 2 years ago. Mybe neither will Wells...

2) Our rankings arent actually that far off. 7th last season is about right - though its partially a fluke of ignoring Swan's demise, whilst not knowing about Grundy's surge in development. We just missed Adams for 6 games, Sidey for a few, whilst our back and forward lines were relatively woeful... also partially due to injuries.
Next year seems about right too. Even though it only rates the 5 best mids plus the ruck - with the 8 or so players we'll have running through the midfield, we could have the best - if not top 3 - on paper at least.

I'd like to think that Wells & Pendles will hold their form and fitness though, and that Grundy, De Goey, Aish, Crisp, Adams and Treloar all continue to develop... along with Sidey potentially being able to step up again.

If they do, its then up to the forwards to kick on, and the backs to click, and finals are well within reach...

The teams I think we should end up ahead of include...

Hawthorn
Geelong
North
Fremantle
Port Adelaide
Essendon
Carlton
Gold Coast
Brisbane
Richmond
St Kilda

... which puts us in 7th place. All other teams should be well within our sights, if we want to climb a bit further too.

No surprise, really, our midfield bats fairly deep. As for reflective results, obviously our forward line and defence have had some say in them!

a Non-existent forward line and a constantly changing backline due to injuries and form
