Post subject: Players battle for Test places.Reply with quote

Players mentioned for the Adelaide Oval Test turned in varying performances, on day 1 of the third round of Sheffield Shield: Openers, Cameron Bancroft and Joe Burns both failed to reach double figures. Marcus Stoinis scored 11. Usman Khawaja notched a century. Out for 106. Peter Handscomb scored a patient 110 n.o.

Chad Sayers returned 0/65 from 23 overs. Don't know why Joe Mennie isn't playing. Adam Zampa received punishment, early but ended the day with 3/92 from 21 overs. Although not mentioned as possibles, and with Burns and Bancroft failing, (S Marsh still injured) young opener, Travis Dean emerges as a possible mate for Dave Warner. He batted all day for an excellent 134 n.o. Bulls' opener, Matt Renshaw scored 108. Voges played but retired hurt for 16. Hit on the helmet. Almost certainly will miss the 3rd. Test. That's his second concussion, this season. Mitch Marsh is also injured.

Summary: Handscomb's ton could well see him taking Voges' place at #5, for Adelaide. Khawaja's place, at first drop, looks safe. Is Dean too inexperienced to open for Australia, against the Proteas ? He created history in the first SS match, last season when he became the first man to score a century in each innings of his Sheffield Shield debut.

There's a pace bowling spot up for grabs. Not sure if both Sids and Mennie are being rested. Jackson Bird ? 2/60 from 18 overs. Scott Boland ? Day 2 should prove interesting. Especially if Dean gets a double ton. Smile

Peter Handscomb's 215 almost certainly propels him into the Test team.

Travis Dean didn't add to his o/night 134.

Cam White was 75 n.o. when Victoria declared.

Adam Zampa took 4/141. Maybe a long shot but could replace Lyon, at least for this Test, as it's his home track.

George Bailey could've done with a few more than his 24.

SA hopefuls, Jake Lehmann, Callum Ferguson and Travis Head all missed out on a big score.

31 y.o. ex-Aussie Test bat, Alex Doolan has put his hand up.

202 n.o. in Tasmania's 7/388.

Definitely worth considering with that total.

Chris Tremain (3/22) just dented the hopes of 2 Test hopefuls - Maddinson (6) and Henriques (2) - and improved his own.

Seems Chadd Sayers has the inside running for the third quick - esp. as the Adelaide Oval is his home track.

He gets his chance, today, as Q'land has just started its second innings.

Good news for Sayers. Not so good for Joe Burns.

Out for 2, lbw to Sayers.

Double failure for Cam Bancroft. 2 & 11.

-------------------------

Sayers has 2/43 against Q'land.

Alex Doolan's o/night 202 was converted to Retired hurt 202 when he was unable to bat, today.

He was concussed in the late overs of yesterday but batted out the day. I'm not sure of the guidelines re. concussion, with Cricket Australia, but the Test begins in 5 days.

Chadd Sayers took 2 wickets but was unimpressive, with 2/140 for the match.

Chris Tremain returned an excellent 4/22 from 18 overs, against the strong Blues' batting lineup and has the 1st wicket to fall, in the NSW second innings, near stumps.

I heard mention, today, that S Marsh will be fit for Thursday. If so, he'll walk back in to the opening spot.

With plenty of runs needed, Kurt Patterson (55 in the first dig) has a chance to put his case for a middle order berth in the Test, as NSW chases 352, against Victoria, on day 4 of the Sydney match.

Just read, in the CA site, that both Marshes are still injured.

The options for a partner for Warner are: Use Khawaja and bat Handscomb at #3. Bring in a young player. Both Travis Dean and Matt Renshaw have impressed, in this round of SS.

Starc, Hazlewood and Mennie have not fronted for this round of SS. Rested.

Seems to suggest Mennie will play, in Adelaide. No mention of Siddle, also not playing but may still be injured.

If Mennie's not a cert, then Chris Tremain comes into the picture.

Took 4/22 from 18 overs in NSW's first innings and has 2/21 from 9 overs today. Those 2 wickets were Warner & Smith - both bowled. He also claimed Smith in the first innings.

He has 15 wickets @ 14.86, this season and there are 7 NSW wickets up for grabs, today.

He was out to Jon Holland, for 1.
