How do you feel about his playing days with Collingwood? I always felt like he didn't get the accolades he deserved as a player. (Along with our entire backline in those days really).
He was a steal at pick 49 after he wasn't re-signed by St Kilda at the end of 2000.
Is he the sort of player that we need now? Or were you not overly thrilled by his time here?
I'll never forget his lone Collingwood goal. Against Carton in '07. What a day that was. _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |

Defenders are always understated, because they do the dirty work, not the fun stuff at the other end, or the TV work in the middle. All sports are the same, except maybe soccer. How many defenders have won the Brownlow?
Man to have Wakes and Presti back! Yes please! _________________ You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either! |

Managed to get Barry Hall to take a swing at him though, I don't believe he took a hit from him but managed to suck him into taking the swing and getting him rattled for most of the game.
Something good defenders do, get inside the head of the forwards, even though Bazza is a bit mentally weak, it is still something Wakes and his brother managed to do.
AS TP said defenders are underrated, don't get the glory they deserve most times especially in the Brownlow votes. _________________ Ðavâgé

I recall at the time of the draft, I didn't think we needed him.
I thought we should have gone for Nathan Lonie with that pick, which would have been more run. And Port IIRC, were keen on getting both the Wakelins back playing together again, so he was likely to be taken quickly.
Yet I quickly grew fond of Wakes, his calmness under fire, and general defensive smarts. He was a good pickup in that period, along with Didak, Molloy, Clement, Holland, Steinfort, J.Cloke and a few others. _________________ M I L L A N E 4 2 forever |

Not living in Vic I've not met many players but I met Wakes through a friend. Top shelf bloke, great to talk to, was happy to answer all myriad of questions from a besotted fan. _________________ Four legged animals good, two legged animals better |

I'll never forget Wakes in a pre season training run up here in Maroochydore, when after they had finished training and coming off the ground and doing the autograph thing,he was approached by a teenage ,disabled lad who idolised Wakes. Shane stayed with this young bloke for a good 20 minutes ,signed everything that wasn't bolted down, had photo's taken gave him a hugs and gave him his training singlet.Fantastic bloke and a good footballer to boot. |

Always thought he was a terrific player and addition to the side after Malthouse came to the club, but in the end left without a whimper or without fuss and hence he becomes somewhat forgotten by supporters.
I still remember his goal against Carlton fondly, but what will always get to me with Wakes was when he witnessed his twin brother play in a premiership in 2004 for Port Adelaide, and while he was happy for his brother he was also very tearful after missing out with us in 2002 and 2003. _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023

Don't forget James Clement! Our back-to-back Copeland Trophy winner in 2004 and 2005.
Very underrated player by the wider competition. _________________ | 1902 | 1903 | 1910 | 1917 | 1919 | 1927 | 1928 | 1929 | 1930 | 1935 | 1936 | 1953 | 1958 | 1990 | 2010 | 2023

Quite possibly my all-time favourite player.
(Well, OK, if you ask me at a different time I might say Len Thompson, or Billy Picken, or one or two others. But quite likely the Great Wake as #1.)
Wakes had a wonderful ability to be where the ball was about to go. His strength was amazing .... and his last goal one of the best moments of my footballing life. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |
