72 Geelong to 40 Sydney.

Yet Geelong beaten by 30+ points.

Why do we bother with this stat?

Coz like all stats, sometimes its legit. Most of the time. Because you generally can't kick goals if it ain't in there, and can some of the time when it is.

It's relevant if you only have 4.

It's a generalisation.

Example 1: Player runs from the centre bounce, either handballs or bounces. Then, he or the other player sends the pill, lace out, to a forward, 20 out.

Example 2: Player get the ball on the wing and bombs it forward. It just makes the arc - 49 metres out.

Both are 'inside 50s'.

It's more relevant than team kicks, handballs or marks.

the game was over at quarter time for christ's sake. stats are meaningless when the game is over.

Why dont you look at inside 50s during the first quarter? that tells the more accurate story.

Or what their scoring efficiency was when it did. The two combine to tell the story.

I was at the game tonight and it seemed to me that after quarter time Sydney's intensity dropped off as the game was over. They quite often set up with an eight man defence at centre bounces and were content to let the ball come inside 50 and then lock it up. Basically, they ran the clock down from the start of the second quarter. What was surprising was that Geelong had no-one capable of kicking a goal from 50 out.

And I hope they encounter the same problem in 2017 too.

Every inside 50 is a potential goal scoring opportunity. It is what teams do with it that count.

Actually we talk so much about our forward line, but the Geelong forward line is worse than ours. It's been a work in progress like ours all season, with players slotting in and out depending on form and injury. Hawkins has been about as effectual as Cloke. Mitch Clark has been a disaster. Henderson has been better in defence than attack. Stanley gets a game by virtue of being able to play as a utility, only he applies no defensive pressure as a forward. Their best small forward is Motlop who kicks the same number of points as Eddie Betts kicks goals.

Their forward line is certainly poor. 1 goal from their first 30 inside 50s tells that story. I don't know what the long-term average is across the competition but from the stats I have noticed in particular games from time to time, I would have thought it was typically between 4 and 6 inside 50s per goal, depending upon the conditions, pressure and standard of the 2 teams.
