Went last break.
I go around 4-6 times a year and only Gold Class. Order one beer and take a few more in the missus handbag. She has popcorn, i go the pizza or chicken wings, the food is always pretty good.

what does everyone else say then? Going to the cinema? That sounds weird

It's either going to see movie title, or going to the pictures. I suppose it's just how the parents used to talk about going to there and it stuck.

Last time I saw a movie was sometime last year, I went to see Jurassic World with a friend, I was meant to go see Finding Dory with the same friend but the car decided against it.

Goin' to the flicks, always. Except when we had multiple Drive-Ins (how good were they! We had a dozen or so in Perth in the 80's), then it was 'Goin'to the drives'. Cool

As an aside, does anyone still say "going to the pictures"? Just realised that wasn't a phrase I'd heard in a long time (I think my grandma used to say it).

Don't they both (movies & pictures) originate from what they were called when first released - "moving pictures" - then shortened to either 'movies' or 'pictures'. That's my theory anyway.

I think you're right! Would be interesting to see when the term 'movie' became common.

I'm willing to back LuvDids on this, it also relates to the term "Flicks" that Skid mentioned.

You would feel really old if you called them 'Talkies' as opposed to silent films Shocked

And the plot thickens....

When speaking of movies, where did the term "flick" come from, as in, "We caught a good flick last night"?

As slang for "film," it is first attested 1926, a back-formation from flicker, from their flickering appearance.

Not so long ago. I think they had talkies already and were experimenting with colour.

Picture is sometimes used in the UK to mean a movie, it's colloquial English. It also has other meanings, a picture is just any kind of graphical representation, an image in general, whether moving or still. Also in the UK, although somewhat old fashioned now, "going to the pictures", means "going to the cinema".

Movie means a moving picture - a motion picture

All sorts of explanations there Cool

Ah there you have it!

If we just feel like going out, and don't have a movie in mind we say "want to go to the movies/pictures?"! Cinema sounds kinda precious, maybe it's an amaerican thing since I'd guess 90 percent of movies shown at the main stream cinemas are American. If you said I'm going to the cinema to me I'd think you meant an art house thing! Although if you talk about a shopping centre you'd say "does it have a cinema!"

I reckon her best role is as the not so pretty https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aileen_Wuornos

Though she's a great actress in everything to me.
I like this comeback though!
