He then rang our club and spoke to someone who told him he was way off the mark but couldn't tell him what our number was, but it was less than half of what Robbo suggested. That's how the figure of 11 druggies at Collingwood became the story. Robbo had no idea at all what the number was, but simply ran with 11 (being less than half of 23). That's why Bucks virtually called him a grub on Footy 360.
There was indeed a lot of internal soul searching and blaming going on in our club for weeks following this disgraceful episode. Arguably, it completely sabotaged a large chunk of the first half of our season. |
The worse part about that rude was he rang the AFL as well and asked and they told him that number for Collingwood was completely wrong yet he still run the story. His defence was that the public had a right to know. Bucks called it right he said any decent journalist wouldn't have run the story knowing it was wrong. Bucks asked Gerard if he would have run the story and he said defiantly not after being told it was wrong by the AFL. Just another case of robbo wanting to stick it to us for no reason |

What if Buckley starts Swanny on the ground at the first bounce of the first game. He is never in that position and doesn't break his foot

most of 2016 is explainable in terms of a young side that was a revolving door due to injuries. Most harmful were the injuries to two of our best four players in Swan and Elliott, two losses which deeply impaired oir forward structure. Young teams with little shared experience rarely win football matches.
Now that the smoke has cleared, it's also clear that our coach probably did not have enough experience to appreciate that this callow team was unable to execute his plans structurally, and he should have adjusted the plan back to something more defensive. As the year wore on he did so, and the team grew at the same time with regard to skill, confidence, maturity and understanding.
I don't know if the drugs thing made much difference. It probably did not help, but i think 2016 was just a story that developing teams go through all the time. In 2006, when we were far from a powerhouse, we destroyed Geelong by 100 points one afternoon. They missed finals that year iirc. A year later, they were the league benchmark. It was where they were at in their development. _________________ Two more flags before I die! |
