Post subject: A key backman right under our noses: Ryan PendleburyReply with quote

Lots of conjecture on Nicks recently about our depleted KPP stocks and the murmurings re Brown and Frost being possibly moved on after Cloke has put himself up for trade.

So with the gradual extinction of the "lumbering dinosaur forward", it stands to reason that equally there isn't a need for the lumbering, statless defender who provides no offensive play.

Ryan Pendlebury is 192 cm and 85kg and has just had 33 disposals & 9 rebound 50's off half back. The week before he towelled up Ryan Schoemakers and plays with accountability and skill. Was surprised if not miffed why we didn't at least Rookie him last year albeit he was in for season delaying surgery for a groin complaint.

That being said, his pedigree draws some parallels with the soon to be announced All Australian Dean Rampe who was overlooked for several drafts, was stuck playing Reserves footy for the Seagulls until Sydney came along and has moulded him into a great player. A player who this season for the Swans has beaten the "smalls and the talls" plus provided great "modern day rebound" off half back.

So Derek Hine! Forget scouring the TAC, WAFL, SANFL or the Manangatang Reserves and at least Rookie list or select Ryan at pick 97 in the upcoming National draft. I know who I would trust with ball in hand next year down there and it ain't Brown or Frost!

Dude, this conversation has been had before.

He's not an AFL standard KPP. Very good VFL player.

Don't think he plays as a Key Defender and I doubt he be one at AFL Level.

He be more like Scharanberg. A intercepting marker with Good Skills

Ryan's not an AFL level key back.

Can play the role in the 2nds, but even then, he performs better if he has a Marsh or a Frost taking the best forward. And even then, he only matches well with certain types. Put him 1-out deep and he will get out-wrestled by the big boys.

3rd defender/man up/rebounder is his thing. And we have plenty of those...

Yes and I was the "dude" that posted it. And again in the words of that 1990 one hit wonder band "don't call me dude....hey dude"!

Read the post again The notion that backlines don't need monster backmen like the past and the success Dean Rampe has been.

Yep, this. His lack of pace would bring him undone at senior level.

This has been discussed at length previously, much the same as Kritta. Others among our VFL squad preferred.

Not sure 85kg is enough body mass to stand the tallish forwards though.
Dunno what that says about Schoemakers, but it ain't good....

Well there is one thing that is outstanding next year.
If Brown, Frosty and Marley go then there is not much left.
Our defence isn't looking very good going forward.
So we need to do something to address this problem.
I personally don't see much difference between Smith and Pendles brother
in terms of skill and potential.

Realistically, if you want a proper, AFL standard key back, you have to go to the draft and preferably early. Yeah, you can snare short-term patch like Frost relatively late, but the best ones go high in the order. Otherwise, you have to smash and grab one out of another club...

Speaking of smash and grab, I hear there's one going down shortly in ol' Gotham town; you might wanna look into it, and stop hanging 'round us schmucks. And don't ask no questions either, 'cause we don't know nuthin' about it.... Mad

Please don't break our arms behind our backs....

Thanks for the tip.

If you're lying, I'll break the other one...

Nothing wrong with poaching, but there's a limit to what you can do...
