What a load of unadulterated horseshit. Cory Bernardi's Zoophilic Rights Association can petition for the right to marry livestock if they like. Perhaps they too will feel emboldened by the extension of the marriage franchise to same-sex couples. So f£%&ing what? Unless they can convince a majority of the population that the (current) fundamental concept of marriage as being a union between two adults should be altered, then it will never happen.
And if, in some bizarro world, a majority of the population can be convinced that people should be able to marry their pets, then, again so what? That will be the informed democratic choice of the majority. If you're genuinely concerned about that happening, then, in the unlikely event that such a movement ever emerges, fight against it.
Marriage has undergone many fundamental shifts in the past (not least, ironically, in the abandonment of polygamy and child marriage, which is our own cultural heritage if you go back far enough). Culturally speaking, that's visible in the transition from wives as chattel to be passed from father to husband to voluntary partners in a union of equals; legally, that's visible in the legalisation of 'adulterous', mixed race and now same-sex marriages. Each of those changes came about as a result of the bearers of power in society, or the populace as a whole, considering each case on its own merits. Why do you have such little faith in our ability to do that?
So, if a union of conservative Muslims, Mormons and Melbourne hipsters get together tomorrow to campaign for polygamous/polyamorous marriage, then I'll be happy to hear their arguments and make a judgement as a free citizen. But I'll be considering it in the knowledge that it would represent a far more radical shift in the generally understood definition of marriage than was the case with the legalisation of same-sex marriage. And I think it's fair to say that our society isn't anywhere near close to there right now.
So, all in all, this 'runaway train' argument is just a cheap scare campaign with little to no basis in reality. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

It's just a classic "floodgates" argument (if we pay workers ...; if we educate the poor ...; if we extend principles of liability so that people who aren't parties to a contract may claim compensation for negligent wrongs against them ...; if we don't continue to allow the keeping of black people as slaves ...; etc etc etc). Why even dignify it with a substantive response? |

Unless it extends to animatrons that resemble vacuous supermodels but have an "off" switch, I'm not interested in having one let along many. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

If someone wants to marry a Pokemon they have stalked and enslaved let them. Polygamy is not restricted to muslims either. The runaway train has left the tracks and is plunging down ravine and will hopefully take the bigots with them. The Cassandra Crossing comes to mind. _________________ Annoying opposition supporters since 1967. |

So if the old man has say 7 wives does that mean you only have to work one day and shop and cook once a week?
That works for me!! _________________ “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.†|

Ah well I was thinking if he is otherwise occupied I could you know explore other options - once a week is more than enough for some things like shopping and cooking but there should be exceptions _________________ “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.†|

I think it's the Muslims trying to piggy back on the Gay marriage thing. FWIW I don't have anything against 'gay marriage' whatever that is (have a big issue with Gay adoption, which is what this is leading into), but anyone who doesn't think that every deviant is going to try and hook their own barrow up to this one is delusional. |
