Pretty light on in choice of gender |
This is going to open up a can of worms, but there are only two types of gender.
Science backs that up.
What else is were you looking to put in? |
Nah I'm not going back there!

Gender is a social phenomenon, not really a scientific one (well, unless you count sociology as a science!). If we're talking about an individual's sex, that can only be male, female or some combination of the two (i.e. intersex). _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

They could easily have added an other with the comments box as other questions had! _________________ You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either! |

Depends.
Many in fact quite probably the majority use the terms Gender and Sex interchangeably. When a census form asks for your Gender, it's asking what your sex is, not your gender role. Lets take a practical approach to this, not an academic one.
The generally accepted options for this question are Male, Female, Other. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Does it actually use the word 'gender'? If so, that's a little odd. In casual usage, it's fine, but you'd think in an official government record they'd use language a little more carefully, as these words have fundamentally distinct meanings in pretty much every relevant scientific or academic field. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

No, they don't
Quote: | The sex and gender distinction is not universal. In ordinary speech, sex and gender are often used interchangeably.[3][4] Some dictionaries and academic disciplines give them different definitions while others do not. |

Not that I could care less - but, legally speaking, the Australian answer to that particular issue would be the one which is found in the Macquarie Dictionary. Someone should feel free to look. |

I'm not interested in using a dictionary that requires subscriptions, but if it agrees with David then maybe government departments should subscribe.
Or else accept that common usage eventually supplants the academic minority. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

The ABS has published its standards for sex and gender classification and criteria, revised as recently as February 2016. I can't post the link but the ABS catalogue number is 1200.0.55.012. If you google "ABS standard for sex and gender variables" you should get the link. The "underlying concepts" and "classification and coding" tabs in that publication will answer all questions concerning how the ABS treats the issues of "gender" and "sex". In short, each is divided into male, female and other but the classification instructions are different for each. |

Did the census online just now. Took 15 minutes.
Interesting the question about sex/gender didn't use either term, it just said "Is Stuart Male or Female?", Then said if you want to identify as something other you need to fill in a paper form. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |
