Aussies win first medal!

Australia has its first medal of the Rio Olympics, with the men’s archery team defeating China in the bronze medal match.

Australia’s team of Taylor Worth, Ryan Tyack and Alec Potts jumped out to an early lead before holding off a late fightback from the Chinese team to triumph 6-2 at Sambodromo.
2 gold medals for Australia.

-------------------------------------------------

First gold.

Mack Horton won the 400 metres freestyle, beating defending champion Sun Yang of China.

The second gold came from the Women’s 4x100m freestyle relay... and a new world record!

It's MACK Horton.

Going to delete this too?

...and yet they have the nerve to verbally abuse Mack Horton on social media.

And another Gold to a Collingwood connection - her brother Justin (rookie 2002) together with Kyle Chalmers (son of Brett -drafted in 92 but never played for us of course) and Steve Hooker pole vault - brother of Tom

Aussie men's basketball qualify for medal round beating Lithuania 90-64 and look set to play USA for gold
We've now beaten teams ranked 3-5-6 in the world and run the USA close

I just want a medal in the mens basketball.

Preferably gold obviously. But getting thare and beating the USA would be some task. If we get passed Serbia tonight, then the worst we can get is Silver.

I'd love to get into that gold medal game.

It'd be shattering to finish 4th.

Chloe Esposito just won gold in the Modern Pentathlon. That's the first time Australia has won the gold in that event.

Great game by Australia. Just trailing by the bare 26 at three-quarter time. This is how they get to go home with bragging rights about how close they got to the USA in the group stages but without losing by 83 points to them in the final. Andrew Gaze just used the expression "completely and utterly annihilated".

We have the close one, though.

Australia has had a brilliant 21 attempts at the 3 point field goal and has pulled off a miraculous two of them (well, it's a miracle of sorts). "It's just about execution", says Gazey: that's why he gets the big bucks for the special comments....
