Aussies win first medal!

Australia has its first medal of the Rio Olympics, with the men’s archery team defeating China in the bronze medal match.

Australia’s team of Taylor Worth, Ryan Tyack and Alec Potts jumped out to an early lead before holding off a late fightback from the Chinese team to triumph 6-2 at Sambodromo.
2 gold medals for Australia.

-------------------------------------------------

First gold.

Mack Horton won the 400 metres freestyle, beating defending champion Sun Yang of China.

The second gold came from the Women’s 4x100m freestyle relay... and a new world record!

Women's 4x100 free: Australia beat silver medallists the United States, clocking 3 minutes 30.65 seconds and bettering Australia’s previous world-best mark of 3:30.98 set at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Millman makes tennis history.

An emotional John Millman secured a piece of Olympic history by becoming the first male to win a match without conceding a game, writes Will Swanton, as Australia’s chef de mission Kitty Chiller watched his commanding victory from a courtside seat.

Millman trounced Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis 6-0 6-0 before walking off Court 4 at the Olympic Tennis Centre and meeting Chiller for the first time. Her public dispute with Nick Kyrgios had triggered the withdrawal of Australia’s No.1 player and ensured Millman an Olympic berth. Having overcome career-threatening injuries in a famously hard-fought career Millman, who had been nominated by Chiller as the embodiment of the Olympic spirit, marched at the opening ceremony at Maracana Stadium before annihilating Berankis in their 11am match the following day. “Have I?” Millman grinned when he was told he was the first male to record a double bagel in Olympic tennis.

Women’s sevens win 53-0

The Australian women’s sevens team was near-faultless in its historic opening Olympic rugby match today, blitzing Colombia by 53-0, writes Wayne Smith, but ominously their main opponents for the gold medal, New Zealand, were equally impressive.

Coach Tim Walsh and co-captain Sharni Williams were pleased with the lopsided result against the South Americans champions but even more impressed with the manner in which Australia constructed their nine tries to nil performance.

Great match from John Millman to achieve the first double bagel in the history of the Olympic Games for tennis.

Good start in the swimming as well after a disastrous Olympic Games for the Australian swimmers in London four years ago.

Current Gold Medal Tally:
Australia = 2
Hungary = 2
USA = 1
South Korea = 1
Japan = 1
Argentina = 1
Belgium = 1
Russia = 1
Thailand = 1
Vietnam = 1 (first ever Olympic gold medal)

A gold in shooting.

Catherine Skinner's shooting gold medal was a triumph for self-belief, sacrifice and the faith of family and friends.

The 26-year-old from Mansfield, Victoria, overcame a world-class field to win the women’s trap at the Olympic Shooting Centre at Deodora.

In a tense gold medal match against New Zealand’s Oceania champion Natalie Rooney, the Aussie showed nerves of steel to recover from missing her first and fourth targets in the 15-target finale to claim her first win on the international stage.

It was a particularly sweet victory for Skinner who has often been in gold medal contention throughout her career only to miss out on the victory she so richly deserved.

Today, on the biggest stage of all and in her first Olympics, the two-time World Cup silver medallist and bronze medal winner at the 2014 world championships would not be denied.

The Australian women's team just won gold in the Rugby 7s, defeating NZ 24:17. It was actually a comfortable victory, because they led 24:10 until NZ got a last play try and conversion. The turning point came when they ran in a try with the last play of the first half (to lead 10:5, after NZ had scored first) and then scored a converted try early in the second, both while NZ was a player down (for a sin bin penalty).

Gold in the 100 metres free - the first since Michael Wenden, in '68.

Well done, Kyle Chalmers.

Yes. Son of Brett who, IIRC, would - but for some allegations of draft-tampering - have played for the 'Pies.
