Post subject: How do our players stack up?Reply with quote

I have looked at our players' AFL Player Ranking Points this season (might be a small margin of error as I am reading each game off a published graph).

It is interesting to see where our players' performances this season sit in context of the best players around the league. I have compared them to the published leaders (http://www.afl.com.au/afl-player-ratings), but note that these leaders are based off each player's last 40 games and weighted in favour of more recent games (see http://www.afl.com.au/stats/player-ratings/ratings-explained).

You can compare across groups if you disagree with my categorisation of our players.

Rucks

Leaders: Natanui (595.7) avg 14.9, Goldstein (592.7), Gawn (490.2), Sandilands (464.2), Jacobs (462.5) - remember this is a weighted aggregate over the last 40 games.

Grundy 185 in 17 games (avg 10.9) - puts him right up challenging for this top bracket now.

Cox 84 in 10 games (avg 8.4).

Midfielders

Leaders: Dangerfield (708.2) avg 17.7, Pendlebury (617.Cool, Bontempelli (590.1), JP Kennedy (586.1), Sloane (570.7) - remember this is a weighted aggregate over the last 40 games.

Pendlebury (see above for longer-term weighted aggregate) 324 in 18 games (avg 18.0).

Treloar 271 in 18 games (avg 15.1).

Adams 172 in 12 games (avg 14.3).

Broomhead 12 in 2 games (avg 6.0).

Leaders: Franklin (490.4) avg 12.3, Tom J Lynch (474.Cool, Westhoff (473.9), Jarryd Roughead (466.6), Jack Reiwoldt (450.0) - remember this is a weighted aggregate over the last 40 games.

Cloke 70 in 11 games (avg 6.4).

A better way to judge our team, how many would get at gig in any of the current top four teams with full lists?

It's interesting MM I looked the other week at rankings in terms of players and then broke it down to positions but only worried about our players.
Pendles and Treloar both rated in top 10 midfielders and top 10 in the comp
Adams was around 30th by memory and Sidey at 49
Purely on midfielders there was 29 in the top 50 and our players rated 4-9-23-28 being Treloar Pendles then Adams and Sidey
If you added in small forwards/midfielders by memory was around 37 and our guys were 2 in the top 10 Adams around 27 and Sidey was around 33
That was on the weighted system season only not over extended period
Interfering as well was the increase decrease in ranking points after wins and losses
By memory the system punishes ineffective disposals and alike but rewards goals clearances inside 50's and 1% efforts for midfielders and hit outs to advantage marks etc for rucks and marks goals and contests for forwards, spoils intercepts and alike for backs so it's w balanced system depending on the position played

You are welcome to that analysis Culprit! What I have done above (for the most part) is compare young developing players to the league leaders in the relevant positions. There are a few of our young guys who are performing at or close to the above average and elite players in the competition.

We would obviously be hoping (and expecting) greater development from our young list than say Norf who have an older experienced list.

Pre-season I posted our player rankings from the Champion Data AFL Prospectus. Long story short - we only had one "elite" player in Pendlebury and 11 "above-average" players: Swan, Sidey, Goldsack, Blair, Brown, Howe, Treloar, Elliott, Fasolo, Williams and Langdon.

The rankings must place undue emphasis on useless handballs putting the receiving players under pressure.

And look how the year has panned out with that lot. Pendles is still elite. Swan Elliott Goldsack Langdon have basically played nil football, Brown Blair have had there ratings drop, Howe has been ok, Fasalo has improved, Williams has gone backwards and Sidey is about on par with last year maybe a few rankings points down
