Sorry if u banning greyhounds then horse racing should be next.

Totally agree. Ban it. Country fun races only.

What a crazy idea! The industry employs around 15000 directly and thousands more indirectly in NSW alone.

All they need to do is police and enforce the codes laws.

We might as well ban ALL pet ownership because 1000's of people mistreat their domestic pets.

Will be successfully contested in the courts I believe.

That's the thing, they were given the chance, and it didn't happen.

Re the pets, that's what Oscars law and other welfare groups are trying to improve. I don't get how anyone mistreats an animal. It just makes my blood boil.

Are you on the methane again?

The point about it is it is not one or two bad apples. Essentially a lot of the industry in NSW is part of maltreatment, murder & cruelty to Greyhounds.

If you can't run a business without murder, cruelty, maltreatment then those responsible that is the industry can f*ck off. However they do need assistance to "downsize" & adapt.

They were given plenty of time & plenty of chances. The owners & trainers etc utterly ignored the opportunity they were given.

Now for jumps racing & getting rid of the horse drawn carriages in Melbourne's CBD.

One of the measures of a civilised society is how you treat the defenceless.

You're on the money.

We need to start with jumps racing.

(mind you that steak the other day did taste a bit funny)

Question, not mucking around, is there evidence that nothing (or not enough) has been done within the industry to clean it up?

I haven't followed the story since all the blow up a while back so I'm not sure what actually prompted this decision.

I can't see the ban staying in place, there's too many livelihoods depending on it and the NSW government is well known for knee jerk reactions (pub and club lockouts while the casino gets an exemption for one)so I reckon this is just the beginning not the end of this story.

This is no knee jerk reaction Stui!

After the exposure of the horrific practices on Four Corners ( which came as no surprise to many in and outside the "industry") there were pledges by the "industry" and their governing Board to fix the problems - but they didn't - just mere lip service - they thought they were above it all and business as usual it would be!!

Greyhound live baiting: Internal documents reveal cover-ups, tip-offs and mismanagement inside NSW racing regulator

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-08-31/greyhound-racing-nsw-cover-ups-tip-offs-revealed/6736034

The Honourable Michael McHugh AC QC was appointed by Letters Patent issued in the name of the Governor of New South Wales on 6 May 2015 to inquire into the Greyhound Racing Industry in NSW.

What is clear, and what was quite incredible in this report was that even after those revelations (made first on ABCs Four Corners program), live baiting continued, and justice McHugh found it incredible and he asked for additional time because he found it extraordinary.

The report was presented to the NsW government on June 16th and it was this that informed the decision of Mike Baird!

There were many negative findings including:

Greyhound Racing NSW had a policy of deliberately misreporting the number of dog deaths and injuries

The industry is not capable of reforming over the short or medium term.

The right decision was made - yes some probably decent people may be out of work as a result of the Government's decision - but so are many car workers e.g. and they were not involved in an " industry" that routinely inflicted cruelty on defenceless animals.

They will fight to overturn it but trust me we will fight just as hard to ensure it stays in place!!!!

A bit off-topic, but I've been hearing a dog crying in misery all night long. At first I though it was the people next door, which I fond hard to credit as they seemed like nice kids, with a healthy, friendly, and handsome dog. Then I had a chat to them and discovered that it was another house a few doors down (no-one I know), and they (my next-doors) were just as concerned as I was.

Apparently, it's an inside dog most of the time but when the owners go away they were leaving it tied up in the back yard. Now it's been snowing in Ballarat this last week or so, and some heavy frosts as well - Ballarat gets seriously cold - and this poor little short-haired animal was being left outside all night with no shelter, not even a blanket.

I'd had enough. I called the RSPCA.

Now they can't provide any details by way of follow up (quite rightly - privacy laws exist for a reason) but my understanding is that the RSPCA inspector called a day or two later and the dog was healthy and generally in good spirits. The owners, I gather, were either extraordinarily stupid or extraordinarily ignorant, but not unkind by nature. They just didn't get it. I mean how dumb do you have to be? I could tell that some poor animal was enduring utter misery all night long from three or four doors down the street, and I'm not even a dog person. You'd reckon the whole street would have known.

I gather that some basic education took place and that the animal will be properly looked after from now on. Since then - a week or maybe 10 days back - I haven't heard it crying at all.

Full marks to the RSPCA for a job well done.

Oh, there has been plenty done. Lots. Especially in Victoria, where the government has been doing everything it can to help.

The partner of a leading greyhound trainer who told the ABC's 7.30 the ban on racing in New South Wales was caused by "a very small minority" has a history of doping dogs with banned substances including cocaine and steroids, according to Greyhound Racing NSW.

Industry heavyweight Andy Lord last night said he was being unfairly punished by NSW Premier Mike Baird's shock decision to ban greyhound racing by July 2017 because the industry had failed to police itself.

"The industry body could have done more," said Mr Lord, who owns one of Australia's biggest training and breeding facilities at Gunning north of Canberra.

"A very small minority of people did things wrong because they thought they could get away with it. If they thought they could get away with it, obviously the right checks weren't being done

Andy Lord told 7.30 neither he nor his family had engaged in animal cruelty.

However, Greyhound Racing NSW records show his wife Jodie Lord, a veteran trainer, was disqualified three times since 2005 over the discovery of prohibited substances in her greyhounds.

Ms Lord and 178 other trainers have also been charged recently by Greyhound Racing NSW with the unauthorised export of dogs to Macau, where healthy Australian dogs languish in shocking conditions and are brutally slaughtered.

Jodie Lord is currently serving an 18-week disqualification for doping her dog with an anti-anxiety drug, oxydiazepam, in 2015.

She was disqualified from greyhound racing for 18 months in 2005 after cocaine was discovered in a drug test on one of her dogs.

Cheers.

What this will do is send a warning shot across the bows of all the other states greyhound racing. They either get their act together or they'll get shut down too. I grew up in NSW and I know they have the best cops and politicians that money can buy so I have zero faith in their credibility.

Greyhound racing will reform or it's doomed nationally. I don't have a dog in this fight (so to speak), I certainly don't condone cruelty to animals but i have a different perspective/opinion/belief system than you and Jo do on the matter.
