Pleasing win.

Listening to SEN this morning- David King was saying there was nothing from Collingwood to get excited about.

Granted- Fremantle were woeful- yet had we kicked straight- this would have been a 100 point thrashing.

We absolutely dominated the game for 3 quarters.

Pendles was sick and had zero (possibly negative) influence.

Sidey was reasonably quiet.

Yet our midfield dominated.

Greenwood destroyed Neale- Crisp was back to his best- Trealor got a lot and did more good than bad.

The most pleasing aspect was how well the young blokes played.

Maynard finally put a game together where he didnt give up two goals.
Ditto Marsh. Both of these guys- along with Sinkers (who was great), Marley (getting back to his best) Howe and Reid (as someone else mentioned- both would be in AA calculation)- gave us so much drive out of the backline.

Nathan Brown played OK- should be selected only when match up suits- like Pav.

Forward line was generally very good but scoring a bit of a worry- Trav started well but then looked frustrated- and his efforts during the 2nd and 3rd lacked aggression.

Jesse White was quiter than recent- but he really played with great energy.

Cox- could be anything- did some greta things- and his work off the ball evens out his weakness of marking the (dry) ball!

Blair was excellent- as was VArcoe- both pressure like mad and were responsible for us keeping the ball in the forward half so much.

Tom Phillips and Josh Smith are great additions to the side- move well- dont stop running- generally use it well. Neither will be a superstar- yet, they are impressive players for our future.

Last- but not least- Grundy was awesome- and despite what many on here have said throughout the year- has been huge for us in almost every game he has played this year.
Seems to thrive on responsibility and is starting to take some good overhead marks.

Go woods!

Do we think Marsh could be a good match up for Pav?

Gavin Crosisca Question

No
It is the way he runs.
Some distinctive style.
Just like Heath Shaw has that strange fast waddle.
This kid has a style that I have seen before.
But where??????

ha!
was thinking the exact same thing.
it's doing my head in as well.
he has a distinctive way he moves- a little like sidey- and also (massive call) reminds me a bit of simon black

i was thinking he looks like a bigger player than he is when he runs (if that makes sense) almost 'long legged'. Reminds me a bit of Jonathan Brown on the run - a bit strutty and "get me of you can' look.

yep- i see what you mean- yet I am positive there is someone he is identical to.

Will do my head in for a few days and then I'll forget about it - then a few days later it will come to outta nowhere!

Agree, just needs to clean up his ball use but can certainly find the footy.

Very exciting to see a young bloke emerge. Super impressive for a second game.

Agree - the first few times he made a hash of delivering it to the forwards, but he steeped up and up as the game wore on. Both he and Marsh look the goods. I liked our backline tonight - for the first time in ages, it's starting to look as though they know each others' names. We are nowhere near complete, but it is building.

Good to see Reid taking a few of the younger players to task when they didn't get it right.

Crap game, very cold, Freo were deplorable - but rapt to get a win after the last few weeks. Did what we needed to do but not much more.

A few random observations:
Grundy was great.
Treloar dominant. Can't believe how quick some people are to try and talk him down. He's a gun.

I've loved the work of Jessie White the last 4-6 weeks, but a couple of his "soft" habits look to be creeping back in, such as sticking one hand out instead of putting the body on the line, did it more than once. Hopefully it gets pointed out to him and he can rectify it.

Encouraging stuff from Phillips, although I'd like to see him play to a similar standard in a game with higher intensity before crowing too early.
Good signs from Aish too, without having a massive impact did some nice things.

How good is Ben Reid? Might possibly have played finals both of the last 2 years with a fit Ben Reid.

Love Coxy's "footy nous". Does things differently, but mostly in a good way I reckon. Sensational at doing the 1%ers for someone so new to the sport.

Finally, it's great to be able to smile when footy is mentioned this week!!!!!

Well we won and that's always good.
Standard wasn't a high class game but I thought the longer the game went the more settled and unrushed we seemed.
The last term was very pleasing. We could have just shut up shop and held on for a 2-3 goal win but we kept attacking the ball and doing all the little things.
Really happy for Travis he showed tonight why he is so valuable to this team.
With Brown back in defence allowed Marsh Howe Reid to leave there man and intercept at will.
Really excited about Phillips and Smith both showed again they are going to be good players.
Greenwood should be given the award for most annoying tagger ever he never gave Neale a inch all night and was also important getting some himself
Grundy was so dominate in all aspects was great
We didn't have a bad player really everyone did there job and that's pleasing. Treloar is interesting he had loads of it and worked his butt off both ways but his disposal at times was iffy but heck he just seems to pop up every time a team mate is looking for a option to kick or handball to
Overall it was a good platform and hopefully will lead to continued improvement and who knows how many more wins we can get if we show up with the same desire every quarter for the rest of the year

Treloar... runs both ways... Seriously? Probably one of the worst defensive runners in our midfield. Works tirelessly at the coal face and can break away with great pace, but if he doesn't win it he disengages pretty quickly.

Marsh was brilliant. Great to see a backman prepared to take a mark. I hope they leave him in for the rest of the year. Phillips looks very promising.

And used his pace to make ground to insert a fist when needed. Big wrap for this kid, still has an enormous amount of development in him but he'll be solid best 22 if he can continue to bring that.

That is an interesting observation.
I have not noticed that.
Not running defensively is a huge issue with us.
I will certainly be looking next week at treloar.

^ I'm not sure you need EVERYONE running hard both ways.
Sure, you need to go when you need to go, but you need to play to your strengths all the same.
Swanny isn't exactly the greatest defensive runner, but JUST does what he needs to in that regard.
He wouldn't be a dual Brownlow medalist if he was forced to focus more on defensive running.
(I don't consider Judd to have won in 2010.)

This is why blokes like Blair and Greenwood are an important part of the side in the modern game.

Blair is definitely not a defensive runner.
He is a watcher in this department.

It was an average game of football and those who stayed away didn't miss much. At one stage we looked like we didn't want to win.
Positives - Game time into Youngsters. Cloke busted his gut.
Negatives - Handball Handball Handball, no one knows how to kick a ball these days.

I thought Sidey was pretty good. He was being tagged by Barlow and Ross Lyon admitted after the game that Sidey won that duel well.
