I've been harking on about this for a few years now, but it's now reached crisis point. We simply do not have a single decent ruckman on our list. Until we recruit from somewhere a ruckman who can actually give us first use of the ball at ball ups then we are destined for mediocrity or worse. At present Grundy is our best ruckman, but he is really more of a ruck rover as he gets beaten at hitouts virtually every week. Witts has not improved in 3 years and Cox will need another 2 years to learn how to play the game.

Back in 2009 MM finally relented and we recruited Jolly. The result was a Premiership. Right now, I think we are similarly placed. For all our apparent weaknesses in defence, midfield and up forward, once we have Ramsay, Scharenberg, Moore, Adams, Fasolo, Keeffe and (maybe) Swan back next year, we should have all bases covered....except the ruck.

A good team starts from the ruck.

Agree that it's an issue but I think that boat sailed trade period 2015. Think with another season into Grundy and Witts we'll be fine. Neither will be at what you'd expect to be their peak but we should get vast improvement in their performances 2017 and beyond. Becomes an option should either of Grundy or Witts be on the move at the end of the season.

The Cats may win the flag this year with Smith as their first ruck. I saw him beat Goldstein last week. They got him for next to nothing from GWS.

Yep, he's been good, not great but good. Funnily enough both Witts (preseason) and Grundy (round 9) have given him a touch up this year. And he's 26, should be in his prime as a ruckman.

We put all our eggs into the Grundy and Witts basket and spent the house on Treloar and Aish.

It is what it is.

PS: If they'd gotten Nicholls from GCS instead of Smith they'd be a lot closer to a flag.

Hawthorn says hi.

3 flags without a decent ruckman at all.

Port are on a winning streak simply because they dropped their one capable ruckman (Lobbe) and replaced him with a CHB (Trengove).

Ruckman are so overrated.

A good one maybe improves you 5%, maybe, but unless you have an absolute elite one you're better off playing a battler or a kid and just having more runners.

We have a ruckman, his name is Brodie Grundy, we have good back up in Mason Cox, and a VFL player in case either gets injured in Jarrod Witts.

A ruckman is the absolute least of our problems, by a fricking mile.

And the Brisbane lions from 2003 says hi
And Monkey and Jolly says hi
And Mark Lee and jack dyer says hi
Polly farmer says hi.
Bob Johnson says hi
And the list goes on and on and on thru the ages from ruckman
who have helped Clubs win flags.

Go watch Keating smash Josh Fraser again and again in the ruck.
See how he smashed the ball forward for his midfielders to run onto.

Witts will be a damn good ruckman and Grundy will be a damn good follower.

Patience grasshopper. Cool
