An appalling act of violence in the US overnight:

The purpose of these attacks is to sow fear and hatred, and encourage extremists on both sides. Let's not give them what they want. But something must be done to prevent atrocities like this taking place.

| It was some sort of assault rifle. I'm not sure why, even in the US, it is permissible to buy such things over the counter. According to the reports, this bloke bought his in the last week. |

It's pretty sickening but not very surprising that Trump would make such comments and try and use it to help himself I am sure some others will use this to further push their agendas as well.
Horrible tragedy.

^ The difference is that Trump's rhetoric is likely to lead to more ISIS converts and more violence.
The sickening thing is that he is smart enough to realise this but still use it to further his ambition.

It's the civilian model of the M16, only real difference is it's a semi automatic rather than fully auto.
Got more than enough power to kill easily, even a shot to a non fatal area could provide enough static shock to really cause problems, plus with large capacity magazines easily changed over once one's empty, it would be like shooting fish in a barrel.

Or a standard 30 shot mag. Put 3-4 spare mags in your pockets, changing a mag takes 1-2 seconds, so no chance to tackle him while reloading.

You're seriously going on about gun laws? How'd the tight gun laws work out in Paris? The problem here is Islam. Also this guy was a registered security guard, he could get guns anyway, the shooting took place in a gun free zone and I might be wrong but murder is already illegal, how do more laws help?

One can walk and chew gum. This kind of militant Islamist ideology is a huge part of that problem, as well as the suburban ennui that leads lone wolves like this to become radicalised, but America's ridiculous gun laws just serve to enable such people to become mass murderers.
As many have pointed out, this is first and foremost an anti-gay hate crime. It is also a possibly ISIS-inspired act of terrorism and another mass shooting in a country that has far more than it should. All of these are issues that must be dealt with.
