Brian Taylor's book was not too bad, I haven't read it in years but I thought it wasn't too bad it was interesting to read a bit about the training and such around the club during the period he was there.

Plus other views he had.

Two books better than BT's on the 1990 premiership era were Allan Mcallister's book, and surprisingly Peter Crackers Keenan book - Crackers was our ruck coach at the time and you could see a lot of him in monkey and Charlie Manson. Both give great inside into the mechanics of the club at that time

A very good time indeed to bury yourself in some good books from better days.

Bob Rose - A Dignified Life by Steve Strevens. The life story of my favourite Collingwood Person.

The Rose Boys by Peter Rose. Tells the story of the family's struggle to keep Robert at home after his accident. Read this book and you will never complain again.

Big Al by Jim Main. A fantastic book about Alan McAlister's reign as President during what I consider to be Collingwood's greatest era, in my lifetime anyway.

Len Thompson - The other side of the Medal written with Rod Nicholson. Len wasn't my favourite Collingwood character but this book was a fantastic read.

I'll put the Crackers book on my bucket list, won't bother with BT's tho. I've heard he takes a swipe at Ron Richards in it. Only a complete Moron would do that.

I've still got my copy of Kill for Collingwood by Stremski, great read.

I bought BT's book in 1990 and enjoyed it.

I've got a little library of Collingwood books, the latest is the bio of Jock McHale which I started reading before I went overseas.

I need to get a couple more to fill in the gaps, including the Machine.

Richard Stremski's book "Kill for Collingwood" was published in the mid-eighties so it obviously is dated but it is still the best history of the Pies first 90 years. Actually it is probably close to the best history written of any of the pre-AFL clubs. It is more than time for some Collingwood supporting academic sports historian to write a serious history of Collingwood between 1986 and 2016.

I didn't much like Brian Taylor's biography. It was self-obsessed and quite spiteful in places. I read the book in 1990 but some of BT's radio and TV commentary in the years since then reflects the personality shown in the book. I much preferred the books of his team mates Peter Daicos and Tony Shaw. Come to think of it, I preferred them as footballers, too.

What is your background Dr Pie?
Are you an academic and do you have any connection to Dr Alf Andrews.
Anyway, I really must read that book Kill for Collingwood.
For some reason I thought is was written in the 50's or 60's.

Sorry it has taken me a few days to get back to you thompsoc.

I am a retired academic, although I only got into academia in middle age. I wrote a PhD. on the transformation of the VFL into the AFL (The Commercialisation and Professionalisation of Australian Football 1975-1996 - submitted Monash University 2000). The thesis hasn't been published as a book but I have published chapters in several other books on football including the AFL's 2008 opus.

I have read some of Alf Andrews' work but I don't think we have actually met.

Richard Stremski's Kill for Collingwood was published in 1986 while Richard was a lecturer at Latrobe Uni. It was the first history of a VFL club written by an academic. I think it was very good although there are certainly areas of the book which can be criticised, in particular Stremski's enthusiastic support for Ranald Macdonald's New Magpies. To be fair Stremski had written the book during the early period of the Macdonald Presidency and even the subsequent epilogue was written before the full extent of the New Magpies' football and financial mismanagement had emerged.

Thanks Dr Pie
You must post here more often
In particular, giving your historical slant on the game.
This board is too full of ranters like me with the perpetual "perceptive fellow" and sad saacks division.
A good different perspective is always good.
I asked that question about Dr Andrews as a while ago i investigated about the true identity of Hiss.
It took me a while but I worked it out.
Dr Andrews and a few other doctors in the early years of nicks were interesting posters.

I will certainly check them out, I had only read BT's book as it belonged to my late uncle who gave it to date who then gave it to me. I've still got it around here somewhere. But would like to get the opportunity to read more on the 1990 premiership.

I just found the book to be quite an interesting read, and for the most part a good read.

Macalisters book is one of the best Collingwood books Ive read. You can see the best and worst of that era of Collingwood often in the same sentence.
